Nylon nut?

Good day everybody.
Im trying to determine an approximate age of an old SG/LP junior neck that im going to restore and use for a project build. Unfortunatly the logo and serial number is long gone, as someone messed up the head stock.
I think it still has the original nut though. I thought maybe this could be a way to at least get in the right neighbourhood age-wise. Im a novice when it comes to the details of vintage gibbys but from what I managed to find out they used nylon in the early sixties(?)
So what do you think, is this nut nylon, and when did Gibson stop using them?
It doesnt look or feel like bone at least, to me...
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, thanks guys.

Its could be anywhere from the early 1960s to the late 1960s

Was the headstock sanded so much that the stamped-in serial number was erased?

Way worse....it was cut off.... the things people do.... anyhow, it meant I got it cheap and its still a good neck.. one way to get some old gibson wood without losing ones shirt I suppose.

Kind of look like those horrible Corsa guitars headstocks...

Aha, ok, Its 1.68 inches...

So that's 1 11/16.

Roughly speaking, it was probably made before the switch to a narrower 1 9/16" nut that happened to most Gibsons sometime in 1965. They did change back at some point, but I'm not sure when.

Hey, that's my old neck. I sold it a few months ago 'cause I wasn't using it and I figured the young guy I sold it to would figure something to do with the fret board. It originally came on an SG junior that I had purchased for a slide guitar back in about 1972 or so. I had installed two Gibson humbuckers instead of the single P90 that it came with. I ran new wiring and was just finishing up the control panel by trying to drill out a hole for the jack in the end of the guitar instead of the top when the drill hit a knot and completely blew the guitar to bits. Not just a few bits, but, what seemed like hundreds of small pieces everywhere in my workroom. I was devastated. In any event, I took the neck off, spent a couple of months building an explorer body, put it together and had an 11 pound guitar. As for the headstock cuts, that came later in the 1980's when I built a guitar that looked roughly like Neal Schon's (sp?).

Hi. Wow, thats ultra cool that a previous owner turns up....it a small world after all. A shame that the guitar exploded though when you worked on it. Do you remember what year it was from by any chance?
I got it off ebay, maybe from the guy you sold it to then...

Well, when I sold it to that young fellow, I originally thought it was from around 1963 or so. But, after thinking about it, the guitar came with a P90 that was clear plastic. So, I'm going to guess at late 1960's. I found a picture that was taken in the early to mid 1970's that I just learned how to do as an attachment. If you notice the logo is gone from the headstock. That is how I bought the guitar. BTW, that semi-Explorer was only my first attempt at a build. The SG the neck came from was more of a rearrangement of sorts. I hope that some good Karma comes your way and that whatever guitar you use it on plays great. I always thought it was a really nice neck.

Im thinking about making a double cut LP junior body for it.

The DC style is what I use for slide these days. I have a Korean Hamer with Jason Lollar Imperial humbuckers, A wiring harness that I came up with and built, and a harmonica style bridge. I like it better because of the weight distribution and it is a little heavier than an SG. It has mucho sustaino.
