OK, I ordered the 59 set too. It is nice to have choices.![]()
I'm glad that I could help you in your decision Brutus. Thanks to your posts I felt compelled to do the same.
I hope your wrist is healing well.
What amp do you play through ?When someone falls into the rabbit hole of searching for the beloved old tones, a journey begins.
During my journey so far, there were certain points that appeared to me as revelations.
I discovered how much better a set of humbuckers could be when purchasing from a small winder, with a set of Sheds.
I discovered how much of an improvement a good harness does to the LP guitar.
I discovered how much more alive and singing instruments from small luthiers can be, when I got my Corsa and Vaschenko.
I discovered how old wood matters when I got my '61 Melody Maker.
I disovered how clear and soulful a set of humbuckers could be when I got my Tyson TTL-2 set.
I discovered that there were more exceptional things to discover, when I got the Sigil Roots 57 set with vintage 1957 wire.
Then along came the Sigil Holy Grail sets, that would use vintage wire from 1959 and 1958...
I knew that if I didn't get one, I'd bitterly regret it.
Fortunately, I had something that Dave from Sigil pickups really wanted, so we agreed at a partial trade. I got the 1958 set.
Well, that's it for me. These pickups are it.
This set is something that I want to hold on to forever and not give away, unless absolutely necessary (the 57 set too).
The 58s have a duality in their character; they are biting but subtle, hollow but full, low output but with tons of sustain, bright but sweet. They have absolutely incredible clarity and depth to the individual notes of the chords. Bent notes and vibrato never sounded better to my ears. And they make a solid body LP type guitar sound hollower, if that makes sense. These characterizations could be given to other modern PAF type pickups, but there is an extra something to these 58s that I can't put to words; I just feel it. I could go on, but I'll just say that they don't try; they just do sound like what I'd expect my favourite original PAFs to sound and feel like.
Dave is an awesome guy to deal with. His products are top notch and these limited sets are even above that. If any member here is lucky enough to get a set, he/she will now what I mean.
Cheers everybody!!
P.S.
If some members here (especially ones that buy and sell custom shop Gibsons on a regular basis) wish to come to this thread and take a dump on it, by bitching about the price of this set or whatever; please don't. You can bitch about whatever you want on Backstage.
That set of HG '59 LTD's that was in the Member Classifieds a few months ago is happily resting in my 2019 R9, and is one of my top 3 favorite PAF replica's of all time.awhile back when there was an original set in MLP classified and I think he marched them down to $600 before they sold....
looking back i wish i would have pulled the trigger on those but not the end of the world really...
have never seen any others become available since...
