When someone falls into the rabbit hole of searching for the beloved old tones, a journey begins.
During my journey so far, there were certain points that appeared to me as revelations.
I discovered how much better a set of humbuckers could be when purchasing from a small winder, with a set of Sheds.
I discovered how much of an improvement a good harness does to the LP guitar.
I discovered how much more alive and singing instruments from small luthiers can be, when I got my Corsa and Vaschenko.
I discovered how old wood matters when I got my '61 Melody Maker.
I disovered how clear and soulful a set of humbuckers could be when I got my Tyson TTL-2 set.
I discovered that there were more exceptional things to discover, when I got the Sigil Roots 57 set with vintage 1957 wire.

Then along came the Sigil Holy Grail sets, that would use vintage wire from 1959 and 1958...
I knew that if I didn't get one, I'd bitterly regret it.
Fortunately, I had something that Dave from Sigil pickups really wanted, so we agreed at a partial trade. I got the 1958 set.

Well, that's it for me. These pickups are it.
This set is something that I want to hold on to forever and not give away, unless absolutely necessary (the 57 set too).
The 58s have a duality in their character; they are biting but subtle, hollow but full, low output but with tons of sustain, bright but sweet. They have absolutely incredible clarity and depth to the individual notes of the chords. Bent notes and vibrato never sounded better to my ears. And they make a solid body LP type guitar sound hollower, if that makes sense. These characterizations could be given to other modern PAF type pickups, but there is an extra something to these 58s that I can't put to words; I just feel it. I could go on, but I'll just say that they don't try; they just do sound like what I'd expect my favourite original PAFs to sound and feel like.

Dave is an awesome guy to deal with. His products are top notch and these limited sets are even above that. If any member here is lucky enough to get a set, he/she will now what I mean.

Cheers everybody!!

P.S.
If some members here (especially ones that buy and sell custom shop Gibsons on a regular basis) wish to come to this thread and take a dump on it, by bitching about the price of this set or whatever; please don't. You can bitch about whatever you want on Backstage.

His earlier Bluesman 57 LTD set (made with vintage wire) are my favourites to date. If the new Holy Grail pups are even better, then they're worth it imho. Congrats :)

They are pretty much equal, as far as quality goes imho.
The 58s just fit my taste a bit better, that's all.

Congratulations! Could you give us your thoughts on the 57 set vs the 58?

I'd say that the 57s are a bit hotter and darker. Just a touch though. The 58s have that bit more top end sparkle and are a little clearer.
It's the difference in the midrange that makes them different.
The 57s are like big, hot early 50s p90s and even though they sound darker to my ears, they are closer to single coils in character than the 58 set.
The 58s are more Mark Knopfler in a thick neck LP.

I got the 57 set.....one of the last if not the last I think. I think he was glad to get to the end of that wire as he said it was a real chore to wind. When he got the subsequent batch of old wire and was doing testing he did mention his relief at realising the batch wasn't going to be the nightmare the 57 stuff was.

I hated that 57 wire as had to go really slow...and sanding the enamel off was a delicate task.
Then I got the 59 wire and the 57 was a dream compared to it! I hated the wooden spools from start to finish, pure hell.
The 58 (metal spool) was closer to the 57 though. I just had to bend the spool's upper lip and it came off like a champ. If I ever see more of the old wire I'll be thinking twice before buying anything on a wooden or plastic spool from that era.

I also had 2 spools of the same wire Alex (Wizz) used on his first run of vintage wire pups; he got lucky and was able to use some of it but my two spools were plain useless. On one of them, the wire was all fused together in a solid clump and would not come apart. Those were some kind of plastic spools.

Thanks for the comparison. Now I'm GASing for a set of 58s ;)

Guys, you won't be disappointed.
You can clearly hear in this video the the 59s are equally great! More of a midrange emphasis for sure, more Bernie Marsden than Mark Knopfler.
Enjoy!

I had been keeping track of the whole process with these pickups, however,it was this vid that made me jump up and down and crunch numbers. There is a particular sound/tone/honk/chirp,whatever you want to call it,that I look for in pickups. Its damn hard to explain in words,ya know? At any rate, even through computer speakers, its in there. Dave nailed it.
