I made a huge mistake this morning.

I didn't close the browser tab for CL. Instead I clicked on the search again and since it was still searching for SD-1 this pedal popped up. It was about 3 miles from my house. It was mixed in with a guitar sale. I called and asked if the guy would sell it separately. He said sure. I asked how much, and he said $30.00. I said I'd be right over and pick it up.

This is how it goes with me and guitar related gear. I never have enough patience, and have no self control at all. So here I sit with two pedals. :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Still I'm happy I found one and at a reasonable price.

It is a January 1996 MIT build, in pretty much mint condition. Came with original box and papers. I snapped a pic of the PCB, and it doesn't look like it has ever been molested. You guys can say for sure.

So now I have a DS-1, and an SD-1. I tried it out vs. th DS-1, and there is a difference in the sound for sure. I wouldn't say one is better or worse than the other, just different, and I'm sure I will find uses for both pedals eventually, but I think Batman is correct, the SD-1 will give me more of the "Blues" tone that I'm looking for.

So IIRC from the other thread, all that is needed on the SD-1 is to clip C6 or un-solder it, and pull it out?

Here are the pics or it didn't happen.

I wouldn't call it a mistake, more like a happy accident. The SD-1 is a really good OD, and gets even better if you simply cut the C6 cap off.

It might be a drive, but I have a bunch of pedals for sale!

The mistake was clicking on the search again. :laugh2:

I'm supposed to be saving my money right now until I get moved in mid July.

I am in desperate need of PAS therapy. :naughty:

Yes, I am happy!!!

I desoldered mine but clipping is just as easy.

You want it gone from the circuit; no jumper.

Here are the full list of tweaks I got from HOT TUBES 70. . .

To maximize the increases in clarity, high quality metalized film or Mylar 50-volt caps and 1% metal film resistors should be used. (This is what I used in mine)

C1 - .047uf
C2 - .047uf
C3 - .12 uf ( more bass yet .15 or .18 uf )
C4 - Controls mid range ,Less mid hump ? Change C4 to .047uf
C5 - .047
C6 - remove
C7 - 1 uf
C8 - .1 uf
R2 - 1 meg ohm
R6 - controls Gain 2.2k for more gain (4.7k factory value)
C10 - 33 uf (electrolytic can style cap required)
(if you change C10 the following changes are required)
R16-150 ohms
R17 to 51k ohms )

IC Chip - Replace with a JRC4558 (or two stacked for a smoother quieter pedal)

I really like the change to the mid empasis on this pedal now and how much smoother and less noisy it is. There is still a very slight mid-hump in the EQ, but with the other changes it is now a much more neutral EQ than stock.

Thanks Batman!!!

Your list is in the thread for posterity.

I just finished de-soldering my C6. I'll play it like that for a while and then we will see.

I'm trying hard not to spend any more money until after July. :laugh2:

I gotta quit reading in the Pedal Section. To the outward eye, it all seems a pretty inexpensive way to improve your tone. But a few bucks here, a few bucks there, and pretty soon you're talking real money.

The changes I would make again without even blinking are;

C6 - remove
C3 - .1uF
C4 - .047uF
R6 - 2.2K

Removes the high end fizz, adds more bass, gain and removes some mids. The rest is more hi-fi. . .these are the meat and potatos of the mods.

Ok, I'll look and see what I have in my stash. :)

Dang! I looked at temptation and saw that she was a pedal. :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

no, that's me you're describing.

:D

I think it describes the majority of the people on this forum. :D

There's a reason there is a thread called "Pedal Acquisition Syndrome Pas Group" with over 9,000 posts in it. :laugh2:

:D

I'm glad I don't suffer from this at all. I have TOTAL self control, hardly ever buy the things...

...wait...

...just thought of a type of pedal I don't have yet, gotta run, see ya!!

Sorry I'm a n00b and I've never messed with my pedals but I happen to have a SD-1 and I was just about to scrap it from my board til I saw this thread. Are you telling me I can clip these two things and it will sound better?? :)

Yes, it will remove the high end "fizz" and make the tone control slightly more useable.

It is not a massive change but it does make the pedal sound better IMO.
