Kris, I just pulled my '87 SS out to verify and the body is indeed a little thinner than my '09 Standard faded

Good to know! When you can get a chance to measure, please post the results!:D Yours being an '87, I wonder if the full width was a Norlin thing..(though '87 might as well be condiered the "last" of the Norlin era..as I'm SURE things started in '86 were completed in '87, inventory used up....etc..)

Bufbuls, how do yours compare?

How does it compare to a modern Studio I wonder..Do you have one, or know anyone that you could compare with?

There was a time they had the same width body, maybe it was the very first ones...I'll ask my buddy who worked at Gibson at the time.

Maybe some weren't full width, but wider than they are now..:hmm:

Anyone have any info/experience with that?

Its thinner than a standard. It actually is very slightly thinner than my 93 studio. Could be the white finish on the 93 though.

On a side note, my experience with these SSs is that they are alder and not made of hog. Ive read they are alder anyway, but definitely not mahogany. Again, my experience. Ive owned three. Also, and I hate to say this, I dont like the shaws in these guitars. (Love Shaws though) They love old DF pickups. This 84 absolutely screams with that DF in the bridge. Its my 80s rocker. Complete with Kahler! The shaws find their way into my hog made lesters. Love shaws in an old butchered Deluxe!

Great info!

I was always told the very first Studios were Standards with dots and decals..I will have to re-confirm that source.:D

Kris, I'll pull them out again and take some measurements/comparison shots tonight, but my goodness, I really don't want to admit on a public forum what'd I'd do for that maple necked RD.... :wow:

Dang! That's so close it's scary! Looks like the same finish, with 2 names.

I stand corrected! But I was sure there is a Studio that is full width..but perhaps not.

Thanks for measuring them!

And sadly, the RD is gone, ( it was a first year '77 RD CUSTOM) but in a roundabout way turned in to my '76 LP deluxe, my number 1 LP of all time, so I guess it was worth it!:D

They looked cool, but the electronics weren't very useful to me.

Of course this kind of joke would only fly on a guitar forum!:laugh2:
Wouldn't do so well as a pickup line at a bar, I wouldn't think.

I have 2 one is a black 1980 Standard and the other is a natural 1978 Deluxe that was routed many years ago. My 3rd is a new 16 Traditional which is a great guitar so far. I run through a 79 2203 with an old 1971 b cab that has 1977 greenbacks in it.
