Sorry for my playing. I'm starting to not like hearing myself.

I'm calling this the Ugly Mutt.. It's put together with extra slugs and screws of mixed of 1018, 1020, and 1215. I also mixed wire on one bobbin. Portion of the wire is the "brown" 42PE which came from a bobbin that I didn't solder well at the start. Then the remaining wire was the normal stuff I get the "orange" wire. The slug side is the first bobbin I used the cloths pin to hold my wire. The screws are scattered.

DCR = 7.9
Magnet = V
Slugs = 5360
Screws = 4700 <--- this is an estimate. I tried to hit 5500, but it didn't work and I ended up going off the bobbin. I had to back track.

I got the base and some other items from Philadelphia Luthier which I'm happy with. Great shipping prices as well.
"Ugly Mutt" lol, doesn't sound too bad for an unloved dog. No problem pulling pinch harmonics out either.

I've been toying with some unconventional ideas that I'm thinking of trying.
I'm kinda in the middle of a project atm, & waiting for my 43 to arrive.
Rebirth of an SG | Epiphone Talk
When the wood work is done, I'll be done till late spring, when the finishing will start, & I'll get back to my experiments with the pups.
I'm gonna try a dif kind of hybrid, using 42, & 43 on the same coil, possibly adding a "tap". I'm thinking about 4500 of 42awg=3.0-3.3k, followed by about 2000-2500 43awg=2-2.5k, giving me 5-5.8 per bobbin.
Kind of an unorthodox idea, but sometimes, to find something new, you have to think outside the box.

BP, like Sinster, I can't really hear a dif between alloys in poles/slugs, though I suspect, much like caps, it has a lot to do with the cork:laugh2:
The original paf pups (of which, most sounded like shvt) were a grab bag of whatever gibby could get for cheap, just like the variety of mags used.
I can hear a dif in winds, mags, & baseplates, but screws/slugs:hmm: no, not really, no

Why not trade the SG for a 50/60 Tribute.. or get a kit....

NM: I would have done the same thing as it's a lot more satisfying doing it yourself..

I tried selling it a few times, but people just want to beat me up on the price.
I was looking at some Nice flame, & quilt maple veneer on the bay earlier, the more I look at it, the more I like the idea.

Wanted to ask, on that base plate you got from Phili luthiers, do they have the small holes on the mounting tabs, the ones I got from ad fx have the larger holes, & Dennis was good enough to include the screws, I just didn't like having to ream out the pup rings to fit the larger size.

Here's my 6th I had it installed in my 2012 Studio neck position, but was replaced by another. I placed it in my really cheap Strat knock off. It's just sitting in there and really not secure.

Didn't realize I recorded this one in the cheap strat and posted it. I recorded another..

Well a grab bag is definitely what I have LOL

Seems like string material would have more of an impact vs a fraction of a MG more carbon in the steel manufacturing process

I'm all about the wind and the magnet combination anyway so I wasn't planning on getting caught up in slug materials manufacturing. Vintage accurate is not my thing

Here's my fourth pickup that I wound.. It was installed in my 2012 Studio where the Ugly Mutt use to reside. Once again I installed it in the really cheap 25.00 strat..

Today I figured out my winding songs

I was using a metronome to help me keep a steady and repeatable hand traverse wind pattern, but it puts me to sleep

So while winding some coils last night and today instead of just setting my metronome to 3/4 time and having it tick away I wound in time to Dead Melodies by beck for my 3/4 scatter and some Katy Perry song that the kids have on the play list for my 4/4 winds

I guess it only matters if you need to be able to replicate a wind but I am looking at going into "Mass production" since I sold several of my pickups in the last couple of weeks

I'm trying to squeeze in some winding time, busier than a one armed paper hanger atm.
Glad to hear you're getting some out there, congrats:thumb:

That's a lot of winds on a bobbin, surprised it fit:applause:
Sounded somewhat brighter in the strat, but it did well in the LP too.
I've decided to take a short break, to finish up the sg project, then I think I'll start back with the hybrids.
Keep winding em up gents.

Multitask. :)

I'm doing that already lol.
With the better weather moving in, there's a lot of things outside that need attention, & it's kinda hard to divide up my time, to be able to get everything done.
Right now I'm concentrating on the outside stuff, cause it's too cool to be doing the sg work atm, it's in the 50s, & the sg work needs 65+ (glue & finish work).
I have a cheap strat copy that I got an H-H pickguard for, I'll be loading some of my winds in there to see how much difference there is between that & the all Hog guitars I have, when I can squeeze out some time, I'll try to post up some clips.

I've wound a few pickups over the last month.

I wound a few double vintage specs pickups for someone who builds custom guitars. I didn't record any of those, but he is suppose to do a video review.

I wound a Telecaster bridge pickup and my first 43AWG Hexhead pickup.

The Hexbucker was wound for the same person. Being it's my first 43AWG wind I did record it.

The pickup is just placed in the bridge position of strat copy. It's not secured in place so you might hear the pickup bouncing a little.

Here's the pickup before completed. I will be winding a neck for this one as well.

No sound clip as of yet for the tele pickup.

Sweet!!. 43 is fun, lots of things to do with it that's not the same old same old. Sounds like you're well on your way.
Congrats on the hookup with the builder, post up a link when the vid reviews come out, love to check em out. :thumb::applause::applause:

I've been so busy with other projects, I haven't wound anything for over a month. When/if things settle back down, I need to get back at it, all the parts are here, I just need to make time to get to em.

Here's a Hybrid I wound. Been pretty busy and haven't been winding much. This one took a while to finish because of that.

[SC]https://soundcloud.com/jetfixxxer/hybrid[/SC]

This is installed in a cheap SG Kit in the neck position.. The first portion is my Egnater 20 with tubes mix at 12 and wattage at 9 o'clock position. The second portion where is clean is my Tubemeister 18 at 5w. I go a little dirty and then boost a point.

Hey Sinster, glad to see your still at it.
What kind of hybrid you got there?
Sounds kinda promising.
Still haven't got back at it yet, but winter is coming. I've got a couple coils lying in wait, 43awg, that I started for a hybrid set for the SG. Just been too busy to get around to winding up the 42 coils yet.
Glad you're keeping after it, & it's sounding good:thumb:

It's kind of like the ones that B. Gibbons mentioned in a recent interview (started mine before I watched the interview). 43/42 on a single coil just have to find the right combo and right place to split it per coil.

I also worked on a double hex head. Whoops I posted that one already ;) Well here's a few newer clips.
