I remember having this attitude also when I would see a guy singing or playing to recorded tracks (on tape). I would see them perform in churches, perform on stages and small clubs. Anywhere that the pay was going to be questionable.

I think what Rhett gets wrong is thinking its about art and not being a working musician. Nobody really does care about your art except the musicians who aren't up there with you. And profit does matter, unless you like to light your farts with $20 bills.

I care.

I’ve never been a touring musician.
In fact, I’ve never even been paid to play guitar, having only sat in on gigs with friends.

Being a lifelong fan of rock and blues, and having seen more concerts and club shows than I can count, I can tell you that I want to see everything I’m hearing.

Backing tracks piss me off.
That’s not what I’m paying for.

For most music fans, especially younger ones, you would have to screw up pretty bad for them to realize your band was even using backing tracks. But to me, I see it as an overt attempt at deception.
This does not engender good will, and does not encourage me to buy any of your merch.

And I’ll go one step further - to watch somebody play along with pre-recorded music is no different than me playing guitar along with my stereo, in my living room, in my underwear.

I actually saw a lady open for Wilco that has a laptop and a Vox amp.
But her thing was kinda trippy, which matched her vibe pretty well.
Wasn’t really my thing, but I can see how people would like it.
But that was the opening act.
I wouldn’t see her as the headliner without a band.

I don't care what anyone on youtube has to say.

Play your guitar, make your music. You have the platform.

Talking about stuff is for old women.

I am not one of those just yet.

I unsubscribed from several yt channels recently. Rhett's included.

RJ Ronquillo and Tom B are my mainstays lately.

IDGAF what is wrong with music today. Not one single f****.

Today I listened to:

David Axelrod
Quincy Jones
Kraftwerk
Gary Numan
Vince Guaraldi
and
Primal Scream with Kate Moss

Son of one of my band members just got off tour with a band outta Nashville (won’t say who) where the bulk of everything was on tracks, including a backup if the singer’s voice went. As my Balkan-area students used to say, “Thassa some boolsh!t right there, Mr. P!”

I'm so sick of YouTube, pre-COVID you could find some really great, informative stuff on there. Now, people just want to make money by being "influencers" and shilling crappy products, making clickbait titles, and bitching and moaning instead of doing anything actually related to music anymore. The same goes for about every other genre as well.

If you are performing music live everything being heard should be actually being played by someone on stage. I'm not a fan of even using keyboard loops, but at least one of the players is triggering it instead of the slider munkeys. And tracked vocals should be grounds for a refund. If you cant run you dont get to be in the Olympics. If you cant play it, you shouldnt be being paid to pretend you are

Why won't you name the band? What's the secrecy?

I think most of the time that’s true, but I don’t think it should be a rule. Either way, it just a different style of performance.
