steve lacy, only 19 and already a pretty popular singer/musician records his music entirely with an iphone, irig and garage band. he even uses the the phones mic to record the vocals. I dont think anyone would be able to tell that that was the case had he not showcased it. while he can afford to use expensive equipment he says he prefers his simple set up.

In high school era, we broke old walkman headphones in half. You end up with 2 mics instantly. 2 old sets into an old 4 track, golden.
