Over at the Fender Strat-Talk forum there are CONSTANT debates surrounding the virtues of a nitro vs poly finished guitar. Tone, looks, value, etc...it NEVER ends.

Being an American Deluxe Strat player I've come to realize the poly finish on my guitar is pretty much indestructible. I would have to really abuse it to cause any noticeable wear and tear.

With that said, I have notice that the vast majority of the "new" LPs at Guitar Center and Sam Ash are scratched, dinged and just generally bashed up. I've also read stories about certain foam on guitar stands reacting to the finish.

So my question is how delicate is the nitro finish???

BTW, I am scheduled to receive my first LP next Tuesday!! Can't wait.

Nitro compared to poly is delicate. It wears in nice though and thats why a lot of people like it. Usually the floor guitars that are not behind glass you should not buy as people ram them into things.

Nitro is really delicate, but it still holds up well, if you want it to.I like the way it looks and I like the way it feels. Its easier to repair and wears evenly. The one thing you have to be careful with is many guitar stands attack the nitro .I have a Hercules and never had a problem.

Thanks!
I started reading the link...it started out well but I had to stop almost because it quickly degraded into the same old nitro vs. poly war.

Just interested from a durability aspect...
Poly is much more durable than nitro. [/thread]

Poly is tough stuff, no doubt about it. Nitro is easily touched up. If you take care of your guitars, none if this should matter any way.

The fretboard on my 11 year old Strat (which is poly) has a bit of wear. Poly wears, but very slow.

Well, I think you'll be cool as long as you don't plan on beating it with a hammer...

Deep down I realize there's probably not much difference, tone wise, between poly and nitro. But for some reason, I just don't like or respect my poly guitars as much.
