Agree with all those who psted about the make-up of the Nitro now . IMO that's the biggest part of the problem . The Ring doesn't help, but should not damage the finish so fast .
If it was me with that problem , I'd EMAIL a complaint so it's in writing . Send pics along with it . CYA , just in case the problem really gets out of hand and it's more than just normal Nitro flaking off or checking .

Don't listen to the CS guys who are looking to get you off the phone asap . They are the buffer who weed out the real problems from the Customers who need special attention .

I will say , all of the CS guys I've dealt with are/were great and as helpful as could be . So I'm not saying all of them are NG . I've always had top notch help from the CS whenever I've called .

If the finish becomes a really big issue , push back and demand Gibson honor the Life time warranty . IMO, this is not checking on the finish . Stand your ground .Gibson , Not wanting to do repairs is not new . It lessens the Profit Margin/ bottom line. Keep in that in mind

Try the nitro pen mentioned above by Frogfur. Gibson may make one too. I had a couple of their cherry "nitro" pens in the early 2000's and once I got used to how it worked and applying it evenly, they worked great. I'm not sure how finish the clear over binding though....

Honestly, my two R's are adding new forms of 'patina' daily. From dings, scratches and fading, to worming, fingerboard wear and binding shrinkage/cracking. Some nitro has flaked off around the neck heel. It is what it is: honest playware. If you have two guitars, same make, similar problems/different years......
I think the roll of the neck is just being abused by your ring. No different than Slash divoting the top of every guitar he plays. Do you play your '14 R9 as much as these?
Is it a difference between gloss/VOS? just curious.

Hopefully Gibson will take care of you but if not I'd try that pen and see how that works for you. Also, I decided to check my binding on my 10 year old R7 and there's no wear at all and I wear a ring too.

I have not owned the R9 as long as the other two, but I bought it used. I do play it as much as the others now, but I don't know how much playing the previous owner put on it.

The only differenc I know of between the VOS and Gloss finish seems to be the amount of buffing done to the final coat.

However, there has been a pic posted in several threads of a guy in the Custom Shop with a bucket of something that looks like molasses that is supposedly a final coating they apply to VOS guitars. Don't know how true that is.

So.....update:

I talked to the Gibson Service guy again this morning.

He said they didn't receive my email from yesterday. So, I sent it again while we were on the phone. He still didn't receive it.

He told me to split it up into 2 messages, with one picture each. He will let me know if they finally receive it.

I think I can see where this is headed.

Meanwhile, I took the R7 back to the local mom & pop store where I bought it a few weeks ago.

The owner was very helpful and not the least bit defensive. He immediately took pictures and started trying to get his Gibson guy on the phone, and by email.

He said that he doesn't believe Gibson will be much help, but not to worry. he has 2 different people he uses for work on his own personal instruments who can make my guitar look as good as new.

I guess we will see.

It is encouraging that he was helpful and immediately looking for solutions, rather than put it off on Gibson and act as if he wasn't responsible.

Still not sure what to do about the R8.

You should remove all fingers before attempting to play anything from Gibson....or you'll be responsible for the damage and get fired.

But.....if too much of the nitro chips off, I'll lose the slash tone. :slash:

The Shanks I just sold had the same type (I think they all have it) of Nitro cracking on the FB binding . So maybe it's' normal and you really have a RI that's morphing into a CC Shanks . Hope Gibson doesn't send you a bill for the upcharge :wow:

Good luck with Gibson,
Sounds like the shop owner is going to easier to get some answers/action from than them.

I would also like to point out that I didn't start this thread to bash Gibson QC.

The guitars looked fine when I purchased them.

I am just surprised that the problem has come up on two new guitars, in a short amount of time.

I am also disappointed with the lackluster response I got from whomever I spoke to at Gibson Customer service.

Perhaps the response to my email will be better, but until I hear from them, I have my doubts.

Since it happened on 2 guitars in a short period off time In almost the same area, Is there any chance its from leaning it / them somewhere that caused the issue's?? I have a 2013 that has also chipped in / on the bidding, But its by My front strap button, And I know I had something to do with it.

No, it isn't from leaning the guitar against something like an amp, etc.

I use the "A" frame stands and wall hangers, when the guitars aren't in their case.

After some discussion here, with the music shop owner, and some personal reflection, I believe it is a combination of the unusually cold, dry weather we have had here in SC, and my wedding ring.

Both guitars are chipped in almost the same place, and when I play slide guitar, my ring does come into contact with the binding.

Most of the slide songs I play are in "E" and "D", played in standard tuning.

That puts my wedding ring right in the effected area.

Live and learn....

Thanks for all of the replies so far.

My local guy is working to fix my R7. So far, I am impressed with his effort.

Gibson....not so much.
