This is another great case for relic-ing. Though the remake is obviously not necessary, from a player standpoint the result seems to me to be quite obviously a guitar that will feel better to handle and play. And though others will disagree -- it's just personal opinion -- to me and to others it's no small thing to have an instrument that is so inviting and which makes such a ready connection, visual but also tactile, to the player. I used to think that the HM treatment was excessive, but after seeing their consistently great projects and hearing owner after owner come away pleased with the personalization of the process, I'm a big fan. You have a terrific guitar! (That's the polite way of saying, "I am so jealous!")

The guitar has shipped. Kim provided me with some photographs of the finished guitar. I went with the "Broken In" aging. You can see the weather checking if you enlarge the close-ups. Looking forward to seeing it in person and playing it. awesome result. i wish they had a UK division. Any kind of repro respray in the UK has a wait time of about a year. and no ones really doing braz boards either.

The guitar was finally delivered. I am quite pleased with the result. Definitely looks better in person. I can't seem to get the right lighting to photograph it accurately. The nitrocellulose lacquer does have the same vanilla scent that my other Les Paul has. Here is a picture right after the unboxing. It looks different to me under indoor lighting.

Here is the "before" picture. This is what Gibson calls Dirty Lemon Fade VOS. It looks more yellow/amber. No weather checking or distressing.

And here is the "after" picture. Historic Makeovers Dirty Lemon. It has a more noticeable greenish/brown hue to it.

Nice, I love it… Gibson puts a lot of red in the amber. Your figure is more defined in the bottom photo. How’s the luthier work on the frets? Impeccable I would only guess….

@Sct13 I got the Standard Makeover, so no Brazilian Rosewood Fingerboard or Fret Dress. I'm not sure if the luthier did any work on the frets. I am happy with my East Indian Rosewood Fingerboard and couldn't justify the extra cost. They did roll the fingerboard binding edge, which was a nice touch.

Looks great. I remember suddenly taking a liking to that colour (iirc Peach Guitars had some in stock) and it was fortunate I can not afford a new R9 haha.

@mjross Yes, yours is almost a mirror image of mine. Except for the grain pattern. I think mine would be called "quarter sawn" grain, yours "rift sawn -> flat sawn" grain. I also noticed that you top wrap your strings. Oddly, I am left handed, but play guitar right handed.

Previous owner “top wrapped” strings but I’ve returned to the standard method! Might have to try “top wrap” just to see if it actually makes a difference in the characteristics of the guitar!

It makes a slight “difference” in the string compliance or how slinky it feels to your hands. Bends are slightly easier, because there is less downward pressure on the bridge. And the break angle changes. This same effect can be accomplished by simply raising the tailpiece.

But I like the TP all the way down for live playing… in fact I hate a raised TP at all.

try and see if you like…

Yeah, sometimes decking the TP can make a difference!
