Definitely a Class 5 and a good price. Class 5s in excellent condition usually run around 2500-3500 depending on the top. They usually have covered pups and single ring tuners but obviously they did this one to look like the Red Rocker's.

:hmm: How did you come to that conclusion ,from that link and pics posted within it ? Nothing in the link proves the guitar is a CS made guitar ... Even the Case is wrong .

I'm just taking the seller for his word. If you got a problem with his ad, bring it up with him.

Well I'm pretty convinced by the CS serial number that it's a custom shop. And he also mentions that he was given the wrong COA and undoubtedly the r9 case as well mistakenly with his purchase. So now there is an r9 at GC missing it's case and COA.....can you say discount lol They gonna get killed on that sale too

I remember going to my local GC a few years ago and I was asked a group of guys if one could a certain Trad pro. I said I wanted to see if it was a one piece back. "They're all one piece" one guy said. I told him no. He grabbed it. Immediately flipped it, clearly 2 piece. He got angry "Do you even plan to buy one today?"

I laughed, "not from you."

AhA! So you're a 'Les Paul not so Newb'....:hmm:

Holy Smokes!! The same guitar!!

Dude! Sweet ass guitar!

I can't help but think if you would've just acted like it was nothing big and said "Hey, I want to buy this, is there anything you can do on the price?" You might have gotten another $400 off!

But shit, cool beans either way. That thing is tits.

Yeah, in my day job I'm a tough as nails negotiator, but yesterday I accidentally squealed like a giddy school girl, LOL.

I called Gibson's 1-800# and confirmed that it is a 2009 yr model Class 5. The pic below is the spec, the rep at Gibson emailed it to me:

I'm gonna go back and get the R9 that has no case and no COA and grind them on price, LOL. J/K. I think the R9 is long gone, I only saw one other used LP and it was a STD, the one pictured to the right in pic number one of the two guitars hanging 20' in the air.

I usually don't go into GC just because the inventory is usually mangled by all the 15 yr old kids and there's ALWAYS some shop rat kid wailing on a guitar plugged in at full volume. I went in yesterday out of sheer boredom and emerged victorious. Another funny part of the story I didn't mention in my original post is the guy at the security counter that stamps the receipt and checks the case for the correct merch remarked something along the lines of "Man, it finally sold! We've had that thing forever." I asked him how long forever was and he said, "Three months." SMH.

If someone on staff had replaced the rusty strings (I shitteth thee not!), polished it up and put it in the Platinum Room with a $3k price tag, I'll bet it wouldn't have been there a week.

This is one of those guitars I will never sell or trade.

Always remember this with GC. "Buy now, ask questions later". By that I simply mean you have 45 days to return the purchase, new or used. So if you think it is a steal, buy it. If it turns out to be "nothing", take it back. Nothing to lose.
Personally, I'd consider taking back the case candy back and *maybe* the case depending on what they can do for you. Not for the sake of GC, but it is the right thing to do for the eventual owner
But first call GC and make sure they can (by serial number) find the guitar. I wouldn't return anything unless they can.
That said, and like you said, don't tell them anything YET, and try to buy it if they can find it. If no deal, then I'd look into the return.
You're in the drivers seat now so have at it! Great find.

AhA! So you're a 'Les Paul not so Newb'....:hmm:

When I joined the forum a little over 5 years ago, I knew NOTHING about Les Paul's or Gibsons for that matter.

I just played. If my guitar worked (and I use that term lightly) I was fine. I played for 25 years, but never remotely seriously. My dad taught me E,A,D,G,C and bar/power chords and a few little tunes as an 8 year old. But I lost interest (plateau). So for 23 of those years I'd play maybe 2 times a month. There would small spurts of growth. Taught myself to read tab, alternate pick, scales, etc.

Recently I've been playing 3 hours a day or more. Forcing myself to do the most uncomfortable & unrewarding crap because I know it pays off. I don't get to play many songs as a result. Mostly drills. Trilling drills, scale runs, smooth chord changes, blues licks.

But I'm finally laying a proper foundation after a quarter century. Lol. I'm very hard on myself when it comes to playing CLEAN. I want to sound exceptional. A good example is Joe Bonamassa vs a drunk & loaded Slash. Both are great. But you know what I'm saying.

Congratulations on the steal of a deal, OP!

I think, if I had been so lucky, I would be going back to GC with just the case in hand and a picture of the back of the headstock and ask them if they could check and see if the matching case was still in the back somewhere. It's probably long gone, but it would be worth a shot.

I know you say you'll never sell it, but I've sadly said the same before and been proven wrong. Life has a way of kicking you in the nuts sometimes, and I don't know how much the wrong case/case candy might hurt the value, but I'm sure it does to some extent.

Thank you for the insight! I will call GC.

Congrats and HNGD! Killer deal by any measure.

And I would definitely try to get the correct case for it. Even if you never sell it, having its original case is way cooler than some mismatched R9 case. And, should you ever have to sell it (even though you say you never will, you really never know what life has in store for you), not having the original case will cause you to take a ding on price, it just will.

Anyway, enjoy her! :D

Which brings another thing to mind. I heard time and time again (having to do with other possessions too) people say "It's okay, because I'll never sell it". To that I say if you have any feelings for anyone who might get it when you die, then you maybe want to rethink that. Its amazing how many people forget the part that they're going to die.

Maybe I'm not seeing the same Ad as you are . I don't see a shot of the back of the headstock and no listing in the sellers write up
All that's there now is this ,when clicking o see the original listing is this,

"Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Class 5

Made in 2001

Grovers

Buzz Feiten Tuning System

Very Good condition with some dings"

OK as a point/ example, This is listed as a 2009 ... You think it is because the seller says so ?

http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-5...0001&campid=5338014323&icep_item=282599342715

It's not , it's a 1997 . Since that was the only year THAT headstock was used .... Which was the 1st year of issue for that guitar . Trust ??? , Ebay ??? ok
