Ha ha, sounds like a plan

So I thought it would be cool to scan a Gibson ad from one of my old Guitar Player magazines from the 80s / early 90s assuming I could find a Les Paul Reissue. I had obviously forgotten the market for guitars back then. Out of some 30 magazines there were only Gibson guitar ads in maybe 5 of them, and most of them were for their strat type guitar (forgot they even made one!) with a wammy bar. Given the market back then we're lucky these guitars even got made! The first ad for a Les Paul re-issue I could find was for the first official Historic, which there are already plenty of scans for. Was worth a try...

...says that in 1986, the "i" of the Gibson logo on the headstock is lacking the dot and didn't come back until 1993. Walman's headstock clearly shows dot on the "i" and a 6 serial, from 1986. Must be an oversight from the writer?

I ask because, I know a 1986 pre-historic for sale back home in Manila. It has the "i" on the logo. Looks neat, with its flame cherry. I just don't like the idea the original pickups aren't there anymore. Also has grover nickel keystones.

Mike Slubowski told me the dot over the i (or lack of it) is inconsistent, even within single model years. For example, his 87 pre issue doesn't have it, but mine does - and our tops and other aesthetics are virtually identical.

My 1987 '57 goldtop. Every part had been changed to junk. No name Duncan's, Nashville copy chrome bridge, gold plate, Crome tail, nickel Grover's. I restored it as best I could, even had a sweet pair of patent number pickups that MAY be Shaws. I don't care if they aren't, they are amazing. The binding under my arm is worn completely round and smooth. It's an amazing player with very distinct tone. Very sweet clear tone,great note def, a little weaker output at 7.4 each but the guitar has a very tight bass response. Some would say it doesn't have any, I like it for those amps that get flubby, like cranked BF Fenders. Works,great. Also makes solos really cut through.

Are these pre-histories weight relieved or chambered? Long neck tenon? 1987 on Ebay as we speak; asking $3,100.00. Too much?

Short tenon. I believe they are weight relieved (mine was pretty light). Anything north of three grand is on the high end, from what I've seen. Link?

In ‘90 I bought a new ‘89 reissue that had that same tiger flame & color. It was a great Les Paul, very lightweight and I thought the BL pickups were excellent. It was so pretty I never gigged it and it got sold off in a de-gassing a few years later. That was a good period fir Gibson in terms of quality.
