Once upon a time I was a Les Paul man. Copies, Epi, Gibson - I'd been through a few until I found an R8 that I loved and thought I was done. Then came an unexpected falling for the humble SG and the Les Paul just seemed too similar. I found myself selling the R8 and keeping the SG ...

After some extended dabbling with PRS guitars as my main gigging axes, I wound up picking up a Firebird for a good price and slapping 3 quality hand-wound P90s in here - finally creating a guitar I'd been dreaming of for some time. I now was firmly back in Gibson territory for my main guitar ... and the PRS started to feel lacking in the 'vibe' department.

So, Firebird and SG covered most based ... I needed something for my 'blues' moments. Back to a Les Paul? It was an option, sure, but I'd always had a hankering for a 335. So, my PRS McCarty is now on a 'commissioned sale' at a local shop and I walked home with this baby - a 1997 Gibson ES335 Dot Reissue with a nice figured maple top/back, sunburst finish, 60s neck (still plenty fat, thankfully) and some great sounding '57 Classic pickups. Plus - for the first time since letting my 2001 LP go - I have a nice lifton-style brown case again!

It was gonna have to be either a Vintage Sunburst of Cherry for an ES335. Was pondering on one of the new Satin finish models as the new gloss finish ones are really expensive but when I saw this second hand for less than either of those ... too good to pass up!

Yeah, I have to say I'm sorted now: Firebird covers most bases on it's own - just an awesome guitar - but the SG and 335 cover the more rawk/blues moments respectively. It's like a capsule wardrobe of guitars: 3 traditional, straight-forward Gibsons. Very happy!

Incidentally - since you asked ;) - there are some pics and a (ropey playing) sound clip of my Firebird here:

Congrats on a sweet guitar. I still need a hollow or semi hollow body for myself. Got sucked into something else last night so I guess it'll have to wait. :)

I need some decent light and a spare hour or so for some family shots, now. :)

Howdy,

Congrats, Tolm. My '80 ES-335 (Sunburst, but without that lovely flame seen on your guitar) is getting probably 80% of my electric playing time these days. Your electric guitar search may be over :)
