Picked up my first reissue today... and have a few questions.. Do these pics look right? Under LED light and close inspection the finish appears to have an orange peel look.. not deep , can't see it under normal conditions... Checking the pickups I noticed that the wires were cut almost to length not much slack for inspection.... and lastly I got a little feedback w/ a Fender Bronco so I pulled one of the pole screws and didn't get any wax.. I thought the Custom Buckers of '18 were potted.. Thanks for the feed back.. Here is a link to the gallery of photos, every time I tried to insert they were "too big"

Will try to grab some body images tomorrow... light flame under the right light... not a tiger striped like some I have seen.. I really like the color and overall the first session with it sounded pretty good to my "less than trained" ears....

Seriously, looks like a nice axe. AFAIK, the 18 custom buckers were not potted. Others will chime in. The “orange peel” look in a particular light does occur on some.

First off congratulations!!

Everything looks pretty typical for an R series. Gibson does tend to trim the pickup leads to length without much slack.

As far as wax potting goes, I believe they are lightly potted so the absence of wax on the pole piece isn't anything to be alarmed about.

Are you happy with the way the guitar plays and sounds? If yes, why do you care about a slight amount of orange peel that you can only see with LED light? What difference does the length of the pickup wires make? Guitars sometimes feed back. How loud were you playing? How close were you to the amp? These are trivial complaints. Just play the guitar and enjoy it.

Thanks for all the feedback.... @bluesky636 This being my first foray into reissue territory I was concerned that maybe something may be amiss.. The lack of "Gibson" on the pots and the leads trimmed wasn't something I was familiar with (not saying much) The guitar sounds great to me and looks great... but I also would probably not be able to tell a Chibson from a Studio blindfolded so.. I wanted the pros opinions... I follow the advise of the great Clint Eastwood... "a man has got to know his limitations..."

Just pulled a pole from my '18 R8s bridge custombucker. They appear lightly wax potted looking at the bobbin. No residue on the pole piece to speak of.
