I'm always late with posting NGD threads considering that I have had this guitar for a few weeks now. I guess I'm too busy playing it! This has been a great year for me guitar wise and I have had Curt at House of Guitars to thank for it each time. I have posted a few NGD threads already about my awesome experiences and this one is no exception!
Back in March when I first took a trip to HOG for another guitar Curt showed me some pictures of these 50th Anniversaries that were in the works. Over the course of several months, it grew into me wanting to get in on one of these great tops. These have been in the store for a little while now and I never expected him to have such killer tops left when I reached out a few weeks ago. The supply is of great tops seems endless with HOG.
Unfortunately I didn't get to make the trip there this time around. In a way that is good because I get to report on what a long distance purchase is like with HOG, which deserves and an excellent rating for sure. I'm usually weary about not playing first, but Curt did what he does best. He provided great photos, tone reports and neck measurements of all the guitars I was interested. He answered all my questions and helped me narrow it down to the one below.
The finish is HOGBurst and the flame is pretty detailed and even looking. It has a nice chunky 59 neck, which I am very happy about. The neck is among the "chunkiest" of the other R9s I have played this year. The pickups were spec'd with zebras underneath. They are clear, smooth and just the right amount of output. I have had 4 sets of these Custombuckers and there is definitely a wide variation between them in both readings and overall tone. Though that's another topic for discussion, this is my favorite set of CBs so far!
1st pic is the one from Gibson and the 2nd two are Curt's photos. I will try to add my own this weekend, but they probably won't compare to these:
