New Wiring Help

I installed new pots 500K all around and 2 Vitamin Qs .022 for volume and tone and I wired the guitar the standard way. It made a BIG difference. But it is a little brighter then I like and when I turn down the volume my tone gets very muddy. But my main problem now is that the tone pot for the neck pickup is not working. Any suggestions?
So I'm going to try to reinstall the original 300k in the volume for both and rewire 50's style.
Oh how do you 'ground' on the pots it seems that the solder doesn't attach to the pots.
