hey i just bought a used Epi Slash:slash: edition les paul and it needs new tuning heads. it has the cheap "e" epiphone green keyston tuners on it but i want to get some way better ones with a cream colored keystone end not green. i cant go too expensive though. im thinking about either the normal Gibson vintage style les paul tuners from guitar center or Grover Deluxe keystone tuners from stew-mac. which of those are better and/or do you have any suggestions of some good ones i could buy? thanks!:dude: also vote in the poll!

kluson basically started that design. The difference is more of a personal decision.

Not sure about the other twos, but I played a les Paul with Grover for a week and it was totally in tune.

In my opinion if the guitar stays in tune, and the tuners work I just keep them, if you want a different looking set of tuners, or you want lighter tuners, etc; go for it.

I went for Gotoh Keystone-style tuners for my slash epi. It has 16:1 gear ratio hence your guitar will rarely go out of tune and it's no more than $40 bucks from stewmac

it doesnt stay in tune well which is why im gettin new ones. at stew mac they have the grover keystone tuners so ive decided on them. they are good quality and pretty much any good ones will work but i like them

why do i need to file the nut slots? and too late i ordered the others but if they dont work i will definitely go with some klusons and return the others. im sure they will be fine tho.

Usually, tuning problems is at the nut, which is why he suggested that you file the nut down a bit.

I also heard that if you shave graphite off of a pencil and put some of it in the nut slots, it stops the strings from binding, allowing the strings to stay in tune for longer periods of time.

Grovers are personally my favorite, but everyone has a different idea.

highly suggest you to replace the stock plastic nut. I replaced mine with graphtec tusq and to my surprise the guitar is much more louder and brighter compare to the old dead and dull tone from the plastic nut. and in my opinion the stock nut is a bit too high.

okay thanks! ill look into that and have my guitar teacher/tech do some work on it when he replaces the tuning heads. i dont think the nut was the problem though because the top string tuner was very loose, the little arm that sticks out of it with the knob on the end, whatever its called. but that wobbles a lot. i also dont like the green tuners so im getting cream ones to match the binding and stuff on my guitar.
