New quieter pickups?

I have a 1984 Les Paul custom with original pickups (I have no idea what model that might be).
The major problem I have with them is that they are very noisy. I think these pickups are purposly asymmetrically wound to give them a particular character. The problem is that this makes them less resistant to 60 cycle hum. This is just speculation on my part, but I think that is the case because when I use the middle position all the hum goes away.

This used to not be a huge deal, until I moved. Now my house is a little too close to the power lines now and is generating a lot of noise.

So i'm wondering if new pickups might help.
Noise reduction is my primary goal, but second, I would like to have something a little brighter than my current pickups.

Anyone have any thoughts?

It's quite possible to have a 1K Ohm or so difference between coils on a humbucker without suffering the dreaded hum issue. However, there's no reason why a pickup maker can't make the coils a very close match.
