Hi all.

Asked the wife for an Epi Les Paul for Christmas. Forgot to mention "Standard" but she did good. She went to Guitar Center and got this.

Epiphone Les Paul Red Royale PRO Electric Guitar Red Pearl

Gorgeous guitar. Flawless fit and finish. Pretty happy. But I'm confused about something and I thought you all could help.

Specs say this.

Pickups
Configuration: HH
Neck: ProBucker 2
Middle: Not applicable
Bridge: ProBucker 3
Brand: Epiphone
Active or passive: Passive
Series or parallel: Parallel
Piezo: No
Active EQ: No
Special electronics: Push/pull coil taps

Controls
Control layout: Volume 1, volume 2, tone 1, tone 2
Pickup switch: 3-way
Coil tap or split: No
Kill switch: No

So...under pickups it says it has Special Electronics of Push/Pull coil taps but under controls it says Coil Tap or split...NO

Sure enough neither of the knobs pull up or push down...so...Does that part under pickups mean something? Are they set up for coil tap controls but not installed? Just a typo?

I emailed the Epi Service guy and he confirmed the same thing on the Guitar Center spec page but didn't answer the specific question about the seeming contradiction.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Any help will be appreciated.

According to the specs, someone dropped the ball.
I'd take it back, & get the one you want, I'm sure the wife will understand.

BTW, welcome to the MLPF, hope you get it straightened out.:thumb:

The Red Royale does not come with the coil-splitting ProBucker pickups. It has Alnico Classics (2-wire, I believe). The bits that say Coil-tapping/splitting is probably meant for a Standard PRO, not the Red Royale. Wrong specs on the guitar.

Well, that was the other thing. I went to the EPi site for the red royale and it said the alnico classic and alnico classic Plus. But the Guitar Center site had PRO on it and said it had the ProBuckers.

Which is why I emailed the service guys from the link on the epi site.

The service dude sent the exact same specs I posted. With ProBuckers.

And then didn't answer my follow up questions about the taps.

The guy I had set it up, Wrightfield Guitar Repair and Salvage opined they were ProBuckers. Said they didn't sound like the Classics.

She do sound good.

Just trying to figure out what I have. I like what I have...just want to know for sure what it is.

Its possible that the guitar has Alnico Classic PRO pickups, but coil splitting is not a feature on this guitar. The Guitar Center specs are all kinds of wrong. They say the guitar has a laminated body as well, but it doesnt.

You can tell if the Pickups are Classics or PROs by the amount of wires each pickup has. A Classic will be 2-wire and a PRO will be 4-wire.

Ditto on what PeteR said... we need real :photos:...

But anyway it sounds like Guitar center has their heads up their you know what's! :laugh2: Your wife may have paid more for something you didn't actually get... possibly.

No, the price of a guitar is about the only thing Guitar Center gets right on their website. All of these online retailers use a mish-mash of copy pasta for their specs. They dont double check anything and they dont care. If you want ProBuckers with coil splitting, you will pay more for it.

Must be produced just for GC and Musicians Friend since I tried to search for it at other stores but came up with nothing. MF has same info, but is part of GC so no surprise.

The Red Royales are 'selected dealers' only

If the GC site specs said it would have Probuckers, and it doesn't, then I would call GC and ask for a partial refund. That should be a $50-$100 refund in my opinion. The probuckers are a definite upgrade over the alnico classics (per most posts on this forum and the reviews all over the web). Tough call on returning it vs. upsetting the wife (my personal experience is that women are often fragile emotionally :)).

Good luck!

What? No. The price was correct. You cant ask for a discount just because they botched the specs on a webpage. Most retailers botch the specs. Epiphone botches the specs on their own website sometimes. If they had to give partial refunds for every model that had some incorrect specs, they would all go out of business.

If you want a guitar with coil-splitting, take the Red Royale back and get one that has it.

If you order 1-thing, and then get something different, then you have been scammed. Intentional or not. imho of course.
