I've been working away from home the past several months and will continue to do so for a few more. The two things I miss most are my bed and computer sound system. I've been using headphones with the computer but really don't like it. So I decided to pick up a quick-and-dirty system for my computer to hold me over until I move back home.

It's Mal and the "Creature Feature" thread guys that tipped me over the edge. I need a decent sound system so I can watch the monster movies on my computer. Watching Tokyo in flames is not the same without a sub woof.

Fedex dropped off the sub today and this weekend I'll gather up cables, a few speakers, and amps from home.

I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to home audio gear. Not off-the-dial crazy, but I do like excellent gear.

The sub is very cool. It's a Pinnacle CS-66. I wanted something very small and disposable (it will go unused in a few months). In the old days Pinnacle made very nice speaker systems. Now that everything is "home theater", I don't know how they stack up. In its day the CS-66 had a $1,200 MSRP and retailed in the $800 - $900 range. I picked it up cheap on ebay. It has a pair of crazy 6.5" drivers with 2" voice coils and 30 oz magnets.

Or JBL 4311's...

I use JBL L-100s for the mid freqs of my stereo system (not computer setup). I built a pair of killer small bookshelf size speakers for the computer. They were an experiment that turned out better than I'd hoped for. They have Tang W6-1721 midbass drivers and Monsoon Planars in DIY cabs.

Nice setup! They have quite a footprint. I wish I had the space for my ideal speaker system. I've had to compromise.

The Planars do a nice job with the high freqs, but they fall apart badly below 5K hz which is where I x-over to the midbass. And they seem quite good at dispersion. I use JBL 075 alnico ring radiators for high freqs on my home audio system. They work quite well and look very cool!

In the place we are now I have had to compromise on placement, the old house in SD had a huge basement with a slab floor, perfect for the Stages and the REL.. Drive the ribbons with an old Audio Research Classic 60 and the mid-woofs with an ancient Crown DC300a.. The REL is driven by an old SAE... I have a lot of faded glory Hi-end goodies...

I use an old Crown DC150 to drive the ring radiators as they need very little power. Crown made very nice gear.

A smart shopper can put together a killer stereo system for very little money by cherry-picking high-end vintage gear.
