Ok I do not get this. Gibson, who you pay over a thousand quid for, all LPs and SGs I've tried have this horrible curb like drop where the neck meets the fretboard, all the way along. my Epi LP Special II is perfectly smooth joint, all along the fretboard, unlike on a Gibson... what's up with that?

Do you mean at the fretboard binding? That would not describe either of my Gibsons.

Not too sure what it's called, but it's like this

---------------__
........neck......l...l <- fretboard.

All the Gibsons I've tried are horrible for this. Right the way along the top and of the neck there's a god awful ridge. None of the Epis I've tried have this. This happens on Gibson LPs and SGs. All I've tried, Juniors, Standards... quite a few.

It was on the SG Standard I tried like 6 months ago, the Billie Joe Junior I tried 4 months ago, and both the SG and Black Beauty I tried on Sunday, plus a few between. I've never played an Epi with this.

That would be because Gibson bindings are scraped which removes thickness.

This is an instance where the "cheaper" method produces a "better" result, depending on how you look at it.

The "step" is so slight on my R8 that I can't feel it, to be honest.

Aha, I feel it straight away though, not having a smooth neck. You might as well just key the back of it and take a ridge of lacquer with it.

It doesn't really bother me any. Thats how its always been done - some guy/girl sits there by hand and scrapes the lacquer off of the binding with a razor blade - it is clear coated after this which should help level it out, but there is usually a slight step where the binding meets the rest of the guitar (its the same on the body as well).

I really appreciate the fact that there is so much human finishing involved in binding work on Gibsons... I think that it speaks for the quality of the guitar, really.

"Slight" is the operative word on my two LPs (92 and '04). I cannot feel it at all when playing. I didn't know it was there until someone asked about it.

Yeah, I've never really had the problem either.

That poly candy-coating is pretty darn thick and can make joints look smooth when they're really nothing special.

Nice Liam avatar by the way!

Here's a cross section. The grey is the neck, the brown is the board. Notice where the drop is. It's not this extreme, but it's certainly noticeable, and very off putting, to the point that I wouldn't buy the guitar.

Every Gibson I've played, like ten or so has had this, some more extreme than others, but certainly every one had this to a noticeable degree. Every Epi I've tried has no sign or feel of this whatsoever. My LP Special neck is better to play than this two grand Gibson, I'd expect it to be a better neck.

And thanks for the avatar comment man.

You would hate playing vintage instruments, the plastic binding shrinks with age.
