Neck cavity depth?

I'm working on my first build, a '59 LP Jr DC style guitar. I'm at the point where I'm ready to rout the neck cavity and I'm unsure of how deep to go. For instance if my neck tenon was 1 5/8" thick, should I rout to that depth or leave a little for fitting. I'm going with a flat bottomed cavity and putting the angle on the tenon. Thanks.

Not an expert but I'd leave the route a little (1/16?) shallower than the thinnest part of the tenon. You can shave the excess off the bottom of the tenon later with a plane or sand to get the right height like the attached '61 special. With 1 5/8" tenon and 1 13/16" you only have 3/16" on the body left under the neck - a 1 1/2" deep route would leave more.

Actually my tenon is 1 5/16", not 1 5/8. DOH!! Thank goodness I caught that. So I'm going to rout 1 1/4" deep. I've already cut the tenon to 3 degrees so we'll see how it goes

Well I was shooting for 2.5. Should work OK with my pigtail. I hope this helps somebody, this was a major step for me
