the 13's saw the Re- start of Aniline dye....
It looks to me that they experimented with all sorts of colorfastness formulas. I had a 2003 that had some bleed and that same guitar faded showing the cherry grain filler.
The 2007 2009, 2010, 2011 I had showed varying kinds of back and neck finishes with 2012 being the worst, was opaque and kind of maroon color, none of those had any binding bleed and they didn't show the woods Chatoyancy quite like the 13, 14, 15 and 16 finishes do. I had a 2006 that had pink binding...that was the color of the plastic...went to HM...
The aniline allows the light to play on Mahogany's ability to reflect, if you compare two guitars with differing types of finish, it really stands out with aniline.
Its a superior dye visually but difficult to apply and control in a mass production environment, which is probably why they kept changing it.
Customers would complain, and warranty work would result....
There are some pretty horrific pictures of ruined clothing and cases out there somewhere, due to the improper application of aniline dye....(from the past) hopefully they worked that out, and the bleed is limited to just the binding.
This has faded somewhat since this photo...2013 CC#7
