Italian '60s style is back

Vox Bobcat V90 and S66 new semi-hollow

Vox is launching two new semi-hollow guitars during Winter NAMM. Both the Bobcat V90 and S66 models have a weight-relieved spruce centre block and some voluptuous ’60s Italian styling.

Semi-Hollow Retro Cats
The original Vox Bobcat and Lynx semi-hollow body guitars were produced in Italy during the mid-1960s. Now in 2020, the company is unleashing these big cats once more in the form of the Bobcat V90 and Bobcat S66 models.

Bobcat V90 and S66
Both guitars have a set neck design, which Vox promises will improve playability around the higher frets. ANother modification on the original design is the neck angle. Vox has built in a tune-o-matic bridge, so they should have a much better action than the old models ever did.

The neck is mahogany with an Indonesian Ebony fretboard while the main body is a traditional maple ply around a weight-relieved spruce centre block. This guitar will likely resonate nicely, but Vox tells us that it’s not susceptible to unwanted feedback.

P90 or Single-coils
Vox has designed these guitars with different pickups, with three single-coils on the S66 and two P90 pickups on the V90 model. Both guitars have a set of aluminium control knobs, just like the originals, and a three-way switch.

I like the open-gear Grover tuning heads because they’re lightweight and should be up to modern day standards. All these subtle upgrades will likely make for a pair of very nice semi-hollow guitars. They come in either Cherry Red, Sunburst or Black finishes and have the classic ’60s vertical Vox logo on the headstock.

You can read the full specification if you follow my link below to the official Vox product page for the new Bobcat models.

RRP – Both the Vox Bobcat V90 and Bobcat S66 are GBP 1199

These look very interesting. Would be curious about trying a 3 pickup, semi hollow, with a gibson scale length. Maybe even upgrade the 3 way switch to a 5 position rotary on the S66....

I don't think they helped themselves with the head stock graphic. I know it is retro, but it didn't look that great back then either.
