Hiya all you dirtleg dogs. I recently dragged home a 1998 Epi LP Elite. It was pretty pooey looking with a broken tuner, loose input jack, and lots of scratches. I was attracted to those F hole and the straight neck though and I guess for $100 just couldn't leave it there. Funny thing about it is it shows almost no wear on the frets or the rosewood. I think it was mostly used as something to spill beer on in a caveman's basement. I didn't really know what model it was and sent info and pics to Gibson and they just came back confirming it to be a LP Elite. The guy said they changed the name to LP ES in 1999. Also said he was not at liberty to reveal how many were produced. I guess you have to know the secret handshake before you can be privy to that info.
I have not been able to find a matching gold Gotoh tuner without spending a stupid amount of money on a whole set and have a mismatched chrome one on right now. Also have installed a switchcraft 1/4" jack. Hard as heck to plug the cable in however and I suspect that the little prong that snaps into the recess at the end of cable is not able to push back quite far enough as the jack barely fits in the hole drilled in the wood body. May need to ream it out just a bit deep in the hole to let it push back without the tension held on it by the wood wall.
Restrung it and was surprised at how quiet it was, until I saw that the caveman had the PUs screwed down about as far as they would go into the rings. I ran them up some and she really came to life. I honestly bought this thing to pretty up and try to make a quick buck on, but it is starting to grow on me. Uh-oh. I like the feel of the neck, and that the neck blocks are real shell and not just mother of toilet seat like on my Ibanez Artcore. I like the aged white binding around the black body and headstock, and neck. And I think an awful lot of the scratches may buff out if I give it a little sweet-talkin'. And I like when I plug it in to my Laney amp that the sound makes me feel like I just bashed in the skull of a wooly mammoth with a stone hammer. Now don't try to pretend you don't know what I mean you dirty neanderthals you.
Anyway, looks like a good forum. If anybody has info on finding a single gold Gotoh tuner (left side looking at it from the front of the headstock), please let me know. Thanks - oatsoda
