This post is a NGD post, but I felt it had more substance to it than that...

We all love the sound of an Les Paul, and many of it quirks and features, but when you spend some time away from them, it becomes VERY apparent how many things are a hindrance.

Namely, the weight, and the ergonomics of how your picking arm rests over the top edge. they are simply CLUNKY to handle after spending time with other (possible more modern) instruments.

Strats, are fairly ergonomic, but sound completely different, and I hate the volume knob being right up to the strings, SG's are very comfortable, light, but are sometimes prone to neck dive.

Modern guitar designs don't always seem aesthetically pleasing to us either, depending on your taste.

So, this is a guitar that is hitting all the plusses of the classic designs, while bringing in brilliant engineering (IMO)
It's become my personal unicorn guitar..

To me, this thing is PERFECT! I received mine a few days ago, and I love basically EVERYTHING about this guitar.

Full fret access, light weight, no neck dive, sounds like a Les Paul (there's a sort of boost circuit that really make that bridge pickup growl), and to me at least, looks really cool

It feels kind of similar to a Strat, with the tummy cut and a slight forearm contour, and sounds like a LP, and has fret access like an SG...

I have no desire to modify this at all, it's just so well executed and thought out... and sub 1k to boot!

So, that's my Les Paul killer... I don't want to play my LP's anymore :dunno:

Do any of you guys have a personal unicorn guitar? Something that makes perfect sense for your needs? What would you pick as a number 1 if you couldn’t go with the classics?

Now.....going Relic Pink Strat and buying a relic 60's Tele soon. These will be my main guitars......live I will mainly use my Page Dragon...looks cool...

Funny,I obsess over guitars....who will be #1? Even tried my V as #1,awkward.Push comes to shove Strats and Teles are my choice.

Yamaha builds some killer stuff....for good prices.... Always thought Yamaha was one of the best bang for the bucks you pay ever, from the lower price to the top line stuff.... You know what you're getting with a Yamaha.... Electrics, acoustics, basses, keys, drums, horns, mixers, amps, yadda yadda yadda..... Incredible value....

Yamaha is one of the 'put on black painted shades' and prepare to be embarrassed when playing a Yamaha against other high dollar brands... I don't care which instrument....

I like the volume knob placement on a strat for doing volume swells.

Now that I'm old enough for the weight of LP to be a factor, my new number one is a V. Light weight when standing, nicely balanced, easy to play in classical position when seated.

I don't have a "unicorn" but I think a semi-hollow arch-top V with f-holes would be cool.

Another little thing I like about this:

the volume knob is close enough to get your pinky on for volume swells, but it's not too close.
I know Strat guys get used to that and adjust (I do alright, still whack it sometimes), but this is just right...

BTW, this guitar has a 5 way switch. Positions 2 and 4 are a out of phase, and a series/parallel type sound. with the mid boost circuit, that's 10 sounds, with that basic layout.

It's too brilliant, I'm really into this...

honorable mention:

I have one of these, great alternative to an LP as well!
I don't care for the coil split sound, and I'm not too fond of the stock pickups either, but it also has great fret access and light weight.

not my photo, but mine looks just like this.

My #1 ......

2003 Gibson LP Studio VM
Duncan Custom 5 in the bridge never played anything that would move me off of that guitar.....it just does the job well.

#2....

SVK ETT500 H/H Telecaster

Nothing wrong with that! I do love many Gibson offerings...

Still love SG's, 335's, The RD (my favorite funky guitar), and fender also has many tasty offerings...
A Jazzmaster is on the bucket list.

My main players are LPs but give me a Strat with a 2 point bridge and 2 humbuckers and that’s all I need

Just thought...my FAVE guitar is a Gibson/ THE BEAST 74 Black Custom,bought in 1990= $500....arcane markings abound...biker orgies? Ritual......noise....witches+ T tops ...magical nasal tone.....

Second fave....86 Sg .. beat to tar...Iommi pickup in rear

Then.......see most loved doesn't mean most played....to be #1 is elusive....I play all my guitars....it is just a BOOST for the guitar...they like praise.....

Hamer Goldie ..you are #1 today....if I ever went on a real tour.....

I would play a Johnny Winter relic Firebird.....$8000.....it would probably get stolen....just read Chuck Berry played Black FIREBIRD was sold....a rare bird of beauty.

After Winter gets stolen....hand me a Tele.. .any Tele.

@Tim Fezziwig, I totally get it!

Example: my heavily modified Orville LP custom is going to stay, no question about that!
my Gibson R4? no... I can't bond with it...

I love my SG classic, and to me it sounds BETTER!

My Orville is modded to the hilt, no resale value.

my Gibsons are mostly stock...so the SG classic and my 335 will never be molested. I really like the idea that I could get another to replace if stolen, and that it would be good.

I think that's another reason I love this guitar.. if someone took this Yamaha, I could replace it right away and not be too worried about some unique "mojo"...

At the end of the day, it's our mojo that makes it special. What sort of sorcery is this?!?

I’ve liked Les Pauls since I was a kid. I always thought it was just the perfect design for an electric guitar, and looks cool. I always liked the style of a Telecaster, but every time I try one it just didn’t seem to work out, until last week. I’ve been watching this Richie Kotzen model for a while, I got a good deal on one. It’s really a thing of beauty. It has contours on it like a Stratocaster, but it still has binding on it that looks beautiful. I absolutely love it, I just go upstairs and look at it once in a while.
