Hello everyone... I am a new member... glad to be aboard.

I have a 1995 Gibson '58 Les Paul Reissue Plain Top. It is my understanding that it was built by the Custom Shop although it does not say Custom Shop on it.

The serial number is 8 5xxx ... which from the Gibson literature says that it was built in 1995. I bought it used about 10 years ago myself.

I am wondering if anyone knows about its value and its quality compared with the more recent "Historic" '58 Les Pauls made in the last 10 years of so ?

Thanks

Hi Kenny and WELCOME to the forum !! :thumb::thumb:

Great guitar you have there ! I have a ´98 R9 myself and am a big fan of 90´s reissues. They did not make that many in those days and most tops are spectacular.
The price varies a great deal depending on the top. I would say anything between 4- 8 K.
I am sure it would be appriciated if you posted some pictures of your beauty : Upload pictures to eg "Photobucket, com "
- then copy direct link ( shows under the picture when you have uploaded to Photobucket.
- Then click on the yellow picture " insert image icon " and paste the link there.
Rock on !

With a few exceptions, Reissues do not have a Custom Shop decal. And since yours is a plaintop, I would put its value in the $2500-$3000 range.

You can copy the IMG code from Photobucket and paste that code directly into your posts - like this:

And that is one fine looking guitar you have there, wow. Beautiful colour, wonderful grain. I love the soft but vibrant and slightly watery colours on the guitars from those years.

Cool guitar. Yours' seems to have the more accurate horn shape of later models. The other 95 R8 I saw (figured top, cherry sunburst) had it too. The other reissues seem to have the "classic" horn until 99.

Great guitar!

is it stock? I see pointers under the knobs there, and the 90's historics didn't have this, as far as I know...

Would be great if you could post some pics of the control cavity and under the pickups.

As far as I know the pots are stock. I can take some pictures.... to tell you the truth I dont know that I would know the difference. The pickups were changed however, by the previous owner. They are Duncan Antiquities... which sound fantastic to me.

And thanks for the tip about including photos in the post !

Hi, I have a 95 reissue 58 serial number 85034. I have pics, but do not know how to post them. What/where is the URL number, or how do I find it?

I have a very nice LP Classic too that I would like to post for you all.

Thanks, and any help appreciated (step by step would be good).

Does anyone know if the Mid 90s R8 Reissues have any quality advantages or disadvantages in any way compared with the Historic / VOS R8s produced say after 2000 ?

Very nice plaintop there! From what I've seen these plaintops are more rare than the flame tops from the same era since most reissues (R8s and R9s at least) were flamed. Pointers under the knobs were standard equip except for 1998s for some reason. Quality is just as high if not higher than today since so few were made compared to today (a couple hundred then vs. a couple thousand today). Therefore Gibson had much more time to spend on each one. The older ones, like yours, aren't as "accurate" in many details but they are great none the less.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I actually am struggling with deciding if I should sell her. I certainly dont want to... but financially right now times are tough. I am having to make some difficult decisions. We will see....
