Just a heads up,they have these at GC for $30.It's not the same as the Classic Distortion they had a few years back that from what I hear was a Dist III rehoused in a black box.I was at first thinking it was going to be a rehoused GT-OD but it doesn't appear to be.Nice pedal though.

Well, the tech support guys at Dunlop do say it's based on a GT-OD. From what I've seen so far, it doesn't use the Zakk Wylde Overdrive PCB that is in the GT-OD but a mostly SMD loaded board. Could it be an SMD version of the GT / ZW ? I can't say it without seeing one myself.

Regardless of the above, go out and buy it ! At US$ 30,- for a pedal that's build like a tank, you can't go wrong ! Sounds quite nice as well.

Very nice! It doesn't sound far from the GT-OD at all...:hmm: Perhaps it has a little less gain, if the knob positions are described correctly in the video above.

Picked one of these MXR Classic Overdrive pedals up at the GC sale. To me, it sounds exactly like my Bad Monkey (which I was having trouble bonding with) - But with the BM, you have the high and low controls, for a little more tweaking of the sound..

I'll keep it for the cheap thirty bucks it cost, but now I have two OD pedals that sound exactly the same..

Oh well - the OD search goes on..

I grabbed one to go with my $29 Classic Distortion that I got last year.

I like it. It has a more balanced, transparent sound than the CD, which has a pretty cranky midrange. It doesn't have as much output as a cranked CD, but it's cleaner with the gain all the way down. I'm actually using the CD for a lightly overdriven sound, and the CO for a more heavily distorted sound. :)

Finally got to play mine at gig volume with the Super Reverb today (wife at work) and what a great sounding little box. Definitely up there with some of the best Tube Screamers I've had in the past (Keeley, Analogman etc.) and MUCH cheaper.
It's replaced the Hardwire Overdrive on my board and I can't wait to use it tomorrow with the band.

{Update} Well, after some tweaking, I've changed my mind and decided I really like this pedal! I didn't give it enough of a chance.. The settings in the pic really give me an SRV-type tone with my strats thru my Hot Rod Deluxe or my '69 Champ.

I went back and bought another one. Unfortunately, they don't stack too well IMO. That's okay though, for the price I can afford to keep it as a backup.

This is interesting, apparently there's a hidden switch inside that changes the character of the pedal.

MXR M-66 Classic Overdrive (Secret Switch?) - The Gear Page

Well, I took the thing apart and sure enough there's a switch. Tested it out but preferred the stock setting.

Yeah, evidently there's a "secret switch" on the upper left part of the board when you take the pedal apart, but from what I'm hearing, most guys prefer the factory setting after they've A/B'd the two settings..

I picked up the CO today at GC and I really dig it. It's an overdrive and a good one.

Also, Telechamp, how do you like the BBE distortion? I remember seeing those on the GC site for $30.00 also a while back.

I wish I would've picked one up

Yeah, you're gonna like the MXR CO... Try the setting in the pic for some SRV tone...

I LOVE the BBE AM 64 distortion pedal! I got it for $20 door buster price at the GC Christmas sale, I believe it was.. I wasn't happy with my past dirt pedals and thought I'd try the BBE out for the price... And I really like it a lot! It's permanently on my board now. It nails the sound I've been looking for. And it was a great deal! Not sure how much they are now..

Picked one up yesterday at GC. Also tried out the Delta Labs Tube Overdrive, but after playing them in the store for a while I found the MXR was a little more versitle (but the Delta Lab sounded pretty decent too).

In case anyone wants to know what they sound like compared to a TS9, I A/B'd the MXR and my stock TS9 last night and tried to get the same general settings from each.
The TS9 is a lot more natural sounding, which IMO lends its self great for a boost for solos. The MXR is a little more noticable when you kick it on.
The MXR has a bit more gain and also a bit more contol over the tone knob than the TS9. The MXR can also be pushed to a kinda-sorta fuzzy distortion tone, that the TS9 can't really do.
All in all, it's a really cool pedal, and worth the price! It's not quite as smooth sounding as the TS9 so if you're looking for something to replace one the MXR would not be it. But for something a little different, I'd say it's a cool piece of gear. :dude:

I picked one up, kinda digging it. I don't think the overdrive is as spongy as a Tubescreamer, plus the MXR has more bottom end.

I modded mine so the 'secret switch' is not such a secret. A lot easier to futz around with. All you need is a SPDT on-on switch. I got mine form an electronics wholesaler for $1.67.
