So I've been on the search for the right reissue guitar.. So far, I have found a couple deals. Here are the guitars and their corresponding prices.

R8 plaintop in lemondrop 1950 shipped
R8 BRAZILIAN quilted/flame top 4000 shipped
1968 reissue in VINTAGE WHITE 2350 shipped
Heritage 80 Elite 3500 shipped (not that great of a deal, but it's mint and beautiful.. I always had a thing for the Heritage 80 Elite's)
Tokai 1982 LS-120 (solid flame maple top, fret edge binding, brazilian rosewood, nitro, surely to appreciate over time) 2000 shipped

Assume all guitars are mint

My question here is, which deal is the most "bang for your buck"? I'm leaning towards the R8 plaintop; great price for a mint lemondrop with OHSC and papers.

Bang for your buck...R8 or '68RI.
Most likely to appreciate over time...Brazilian.

I would stay away from any R8 quilted/flametop that supposedly has Brazilian. There weren't any made, as far as I know, and if there were, then $4,000 is way too cheap...like they say, if it's too good to be true...

Lemon is most bang for buck. Brazzy is best investment, and Heritage 80 will probably sound the best of them all.

The seller has a story behind. Whether it's true or not, I'm not sure..

The guitar was made in 2002. Supposedly, a luthier made the guitar from himself. He was unauthorized to used Brazilian rosewood, but did it anyway (secretly, without consent, I'm not sure).

Believe me, I was as skeptical as you. I decided to email Gibson the serial number, and they confirmed it was brazilian. Weird, I know, but I've seen the fingerboard, and it looks quite beautiful. I have yet to see the guitar in person, so I haven't tried to scratch'n'sniff yet, but if Gibson confirms it, it's as good as official, isn't it?

It sounds pretty cool...did you you get them to confirm the Braz in writing (via email)? I would also try calling them, and see if you get the same answer. If so, I'd get that one (or tell me where I can find it)!

it's a 2002 serial number that Gibson confirms as a braz R8? Made in house by one of their own people? I've been told in an email from Gibson there were none.

make sure you have something in writing from them, you'll need it if you ever want to sell it again.

and, hell yes, get it.

Change of plans; last night I emailed Gibson for the second time to confirm that the Brazilian was recognized as Brazzy. Unfortunately, they emailed me back saying it wasnt. First time, they said it was, but they seem to have made a mistake. I called them a couple times, each time speaking to a different person. They all verified it was NOT authorized brazilian, and there's no way of authenitification. Long story short, I did not buy the brazilian because there's no way I could ever resell it for what its worth, even though I'm almost 100% it's brazilian rosewood..

So now what :X I'm thinking of either the lemondrop or try to haggle down the Heritage 80 a couple hundred
