Hey guys,

Do many of you use modes for leads? Ive always been a major and minor pentatonic guy but have just recently been learning the modes.

There are good lessons for the modes available from Justin Sandercoe and Danny Gill on the Lick Library.

Modes are very useful, and for more than just the major and minor scales, too.

Cool video man.

In your opinion, what mode do you think is played in what kind of music? Just asking about rock, metal, etc.

I use modes all the time. I always mix them up with the pentatonics.
The modes of the melodic minor produce alot of great tones too.
Check those out when you can.

I like them, too. If you're playing the blues, they're a great defence against falling into an improvisational rut and the beauty of it is, you can break them up as you please and give an extra kind of individual personality to your playing.

There's a lot of good info on the subject right here - Blakem has posted a couple of his vids (he's done a lot more too :) ) but in addition if you do a search on this sub-forum for terms like: modes; applying modes; scale etc you should turn up plenty of material.

Well thanks to Blakem and Justin Sandercoe I have the theory behind modes down.

I have all the positions memorized for the major scale, mostly in G though. When I try a different key I kind of get thrown off, nothing a few hours of practice wont cure.

Ive been playing guitar for 28 frickin years and never learned this stuff. I wish I would have when I was 16 but better late then never right!

no matter where you start the scale will be the same, just in different keys.. so the way you play it in G, just do the same fingering in another key..
