Well, it's been a crazy couple of weeks! My wife and I welcomed home or first baby, and we have had our hands full!! Things are going great, and we are settling in, but updates have been tough to work on. I hope to be back full time soon, and resume properly. Still though, here is an update, and this one should interest those who want to see some maple.

Okay so now that I have the top carve clamping caul all sorted out, its time for the top wood. Today will be all about the top, selection, and carving etc.
So the first thing i do is go hit up my stash of maple. I usually keep about 200 tops worth of maple handy, but I have to sort it for tone, colour, figure etc. For this top I really want something crisp and articulate sounding. i do not want a dark sounding guitar at all, i think its bad practice to use electronics to make up for a lack of natural tone in a guitar, so I am careful in my selection.
I will sort out several tops that i think sound and look good, then once they are all carved, I will make a final selection from several candidates.

The first thing to do is select the top, match them up and get them ready for dressing.

Once again, I pull out the old glue pot, and heat up some hide glue:

After I joint the edges, I heat the gluing surfaces, and then apply the glue quickly, and clamp the boards together:

Once the glue sets up over night, its time to go ahead and start dressing the final top.
I spend some time deciding which will be the top, and which side will be the bottom. Once I've made the decision, I go ahead and joint the back side flat on the jointer.

Now its time to load up the code into the machine and begin carving the top. This is essentially the same process as carving thre MDF reversed carve. This will leave a surface that is pretty rough. About the same as you would get from a duplicarver that has been used for decades.

And away we go!

And on to the next top. Again, carefully chosen for tone. This one is a plain top.

Now we have several tops to choose from, from flame to plain, and everythign in between.

Based on these shots, I'll be happy with either of the 2 right-hand ones. Any chance we could see them with an acetone wipe for a better idea of what the finished grain will look like through the (gotta be) burst?

Honestly, I would take any of them. Feel free to send the, Missouri. I can trade you for some wonderful American healthcare. That is if you need surgery on any of your joints.
