You're right. I exaggerated. I'd say 10% is more like it. As some folks said, it obviously depends on what we're talking about. However, would you buy a PGates Signed and aged without COA for 5-7 (or even 10%) under the usual asking price used?

Yes I would, because I would have the wherewithal to ship it to Gibson after I bought it to obtain a C.O.A., which you can do. I could easily cover overnight shipping with 5% of 15k+.

As I understand it, though, they will no longer issue replacement COAs.

No C.O.A.?...Heaven forbid.

If it's mint...people think it's a turd.

If you have actually played it...people think it's reputably damaged and either don't want it or offer you half of what you are asking.

It's just a piece of paper that can be counterfeited easier than a guitar. Means nothing to me.....

I didn't mean to tramp on anyone who does not keep the COA...I certainly did not mean that Everyone who does not have one does not take care of his things...Yea it did sound harsh....but I guess if the COA was trashed, evidence of mold, previous submersion in water...It would raise a concern..

If Gibson refuses to re-issue this piece of paper or booklet nowadays, then they put some value in them.

Correct it does not prove a thing. Its as transparent as the case candy really.

The "No COA No Deal" thing is aimed at Guitar Center more than anyone else. They loose everything, and there is no excuse for that.

Frank,

You may be correct, especially in a case where the C.O.A. contains the artists actual signature, but they will definitely authenticate it with a letter by shipping it to them. I believe they will also issue a black folder c.o.a. For the everyday R9's if you ship it to them......both ways.

I would say their reluctance has more to do with the time and effort involved in doing so.It does cost money and time to redo a COA and send it.

Bullshit on loosing 20-30%.

I just bought a 2006 Black Beauty VOS that doesn't have a COA.

How much did she set you back?

I also bought Custom Shop RI black beauty without COA.
Legit one. Not reported as stolen. COA evaporated.
Love non COA axes.

COA's are nice but not all that important . You should be able to know what you are buying before you pay for it . I have done that a few times with Gisons' help . It just takes a little time . Get pictures of everything you want and need to see. If they are not produced , I always walk away .

Many here recall the Stinger R0 Plain top, that was for sale on Ebay a few years ago . i bought it , No COA ,no paper work at all ,but got more than enough info and talked with the seller many times before sending my money .

I got some money off for the lack of a COA, but it was not a major issue for me . The guitar is what's important . I still don't care about the COA . And it's still ~ the best playing and Sounding LP I've ever put my hands on .

COA ? What COA ? We don 't need no Stinkin COA:naughty:

This was the OP's original question. Does it affect value? Well, looks like it does, even from the people who want them. So...knock 10% and buy it if it plays well and sounds good..

It was not a big part of the overall process . IIRC maybe a $50.00 -$100.00 deduction of a multi K's guitar so it really made no impact on price .

10% can add up to a lot of money for a R9 (CC, Sig) type priced guitar and if it's something that costs more ..... I think you might see 5% with some good luck. :hmm:
