I'll be the first to say I've never owned a Custom, but have always been interested in them,
particularly vintage dulled finish Black Beauty examples with very yellowed lacquer.

Since MIJ Customs barely get mentioned in most other threads,
I thought I would start a thread devoted entirely to Les Paul Customs,
Black Beauties, Arctic Whites, Cherry and other finishes.

Post pics, date ranges for various headstock inlay styles, how 3 pickup models differ from 2 pickup models,
gold hardware vs nickel finish hardware... anything and everything Custom related.
Hopefully, a one stop pic and data thread, dedicated to all MIJ Custom brands.

1997 Orville Custom Nothing too fancy with this one. I had all the hardware changed from the aged gold. Gibson pups, new wiring harness, pots and caps. Slim neck profile.

Nice guitar, was a really nice guitar when it was finished.....

Approximate date ranges are displayed next to pics as you roll over them.

Thanks to Jacco for more accurate Burny RLC ranges than I could manage without serial #'s.

1999 lightning bolt models may, or may not, have all originated from Korea, not enough data at this time.

Note that year 2000+ RLC MIJ models (3rd pic) use the same 3 screw TRC as
lower Yako Taiwan export models shown 6 posts down.
There are differences in hardware however.
Some 2000+ Tokai made LC Burnys may be different. I couldn't find any when I posted this.

Fernandes catalogs display the final design beginning in 1993.

First ELP Customs may have had blank headstocks like 1980's Navigators.
There were no serial numbers and few examples, so difficult to tell.

Japan ESP catalogs show blank Custom headstocks until 1989
(except 1981, which shows a standard Custom diamond shape similar to the ESP-Nav pic in above post)

Early 70's Grecos will have 3 screw TRC's and no serial numbers, but can be dated by
their Maxon pickup production numbers.

MIK Cort Greco split diamond headstock differences are outlined a few posts down.

4th pic variation, (production date uncertain), was added here:
http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/oth...l-custom__pics-info-thread-2.html#post5185298

Thanks Wulfman .. and again for supplying accurate flower pot design range dates.

These naturally all have the same diamond design as parent G!bson models.

Date ranges differ from catalog LC headstock pics and from export MIK - MIC models for 3rd(red bckgrnd) and last headstock design pics.
Catalogs display LC models from 1983 until 1999, and ALC models from 1995 to 1999 with the 4 diamond headstock pattern,
and the final design from yr 2000 onwards for all Custom models.
The 2nd from last "split diamond design" never appears in catalogs.

Date ranges for MIC - MIK ALC models are listed in the next post.

Made in Korea Tokai LC models are believed to all have the same 4 diamond headstock design from 1995 to 2005.
Made in China Tokai LC models are believed to all have the same "stylized spear shape" headstock design from about 2006 to present day.

Yako Taiwan Burny export models share the same headstock as 2000+ MIJ models but tuners and other hardware differ.
MIK 1989+ Lightning Bolt headstock designs differ slightly from MIJ counterparts plus a 3 screw winged TRC.

Late 1990's Cort Greco diamond designs differ in color from MIJ counterparts, but the most apparent difference is in the gap in the e of the Greco logo shown with a blue arrow at the top right of the pic. I looks like the center bar of the e passes underneath to the r in a sort of 3D effect.
MIJ logos are flat 2D with no gap in the e center bar. Thanks to Udonitron for that fool proof spotting tip.

Funny Burny never did any fancy customs like Greco and Tok etc. Not complaining though. The 60 is a pretty awesome guitar for the money.

My two RLC-60s are the best solid body electrics I have ever played, hands down.
