Hi MIJ fans,

I have a 2005 Epiphone MIJ JDM Les Paul Standard LQ that has Kluson Style Tuning Machines. Green Knobs. Not great holding it in tune.

I am looking to upgrade these to maybe the Gotoh Kluson Style SD90 Magnum Locking Tuners. These have the Thumbwheel Locks on the back. Here is a link to the ones I am referring to: http://www.philadelphialuthiertools...onal-kluson-style-3-x-3-guitar-tuners-nickel/

The push in Ferrules to keep the shaft centered is 8.8 mm in diameter. Might anybody know if the diameter in my Les Paul is 8.8mm or 10mm?

And if it's 10mm, where's the best place to find the appropriate ferrules?

Thank you all in advance!

The holes are 8.8 mm, you won't have a problem! You can also use the existing bushings, no need to take them out! Now post some pictures or .......:D

Now that's a pleasant surprise. Thank you!!! I guess it's time to order a new set! I was hoping they made them in Chrome, but apparently, just Nickle. Close enough I guess.

Now I remember, we had a discussion about LQs, some weeks ago in another thread! Look very similar with mine!
By the way, why do you want to change the tuners? The stock ones, I think that they are also Gotoh SD90, but not locking of course. They have ''Japan'' engraved inside, just in the same spot as SD90! I changed them cause I couldn't stand the green buttons, but never had any tuning issues!

Yeah, I'm not really a fan of the snot green keys either. And I prefer bigger as well. But I don't want to make any more holes or use a different footprint. So I guess it's Kluson style.

It stays in tune somewhat. But after I play for a while, some wandering happens. I should check the Nut before I buy these if they are pretty much the same. The locking ones are 15:1. If the new ones were 18:1 I'd do it anyway. But sometimes the Nut has problems that makes us think it's the tuners.

RUT ROH...... Back on the fence! LOL

Thanks for sharing your experience. You probably saved me some disappointment!

Like you, I am really happy with the guitar overall. Rock Solid Foundation, so a few enhancements are worth it. Now which ones is the question? :D

Have you swapped out the Tailpiece with a Locking Aluminum type and/or the Bridge?

No, nothing except the tuners! I really like it as it is! It has good hardware, even the pots are great, not like the mini pots that other JDM Epis and Orvilles have! The pickups are really good alnico PAFs! The only negative is the black plastic wire they used instead of braided wire, but that has nothing to do with tone!
Something worth mentioning is how much these LQs are actually fading! I noticed that mine faded a little since I got it, but wasn't sure! Until I saw another one, sold on Yahoo Japan a couple of weeks ago, that faded a lot!

Here in the neck cavity you can see how cherry turned to light orange or whatever it is

Where did you find your JDM? I've been looking for one. I have the SG and it's great! BTW, I replaced the tuners with a set from a historic. Fit like a glove.

I advertised on CL and here on MLP. A member from MLP (Mad Dog) contacted me through CL and when he committed, I went and bought it! I wasn't giving him a chance to change his mind. LOL

Great guy and I got a GREAT guitar. He had already swapped out the Pots, Caps and Pickups. The pickups are Ian Anderson PAF style Humbuckers. Superb!

Keep looking! These are the real deal.

And vonserke, yours is definitely fading. Mine, nowhere as much! Yours is starting to look more like a '58.
