Do any stores in the USA stock FGN guitars or are they all just questionable drop shippers? I tried to talk to a few dealers who show up via Google search but they either ignore me or are generally clueless.

The dealer list on FGN website is not accurate. They don't seem to have much of an online presence in the US.

In my experience, you'll be better off finding one for sale at a Japan store that will ship to the US. Ishibashi, Kurosawa and TC Gakki are a few that come to mind.

I'd really like to try a NLS or NLC model in any environment with a decent amp.

Unfortunately, I think that's going to be a tall order. As you have found, there are only a few "dealers" in the US, and they all seem to be internet only, likely just drop shippers as you mentioned. Finding an FGN in a physical store in the US that you can try out will likely be like finding a needle in a haystack.

It's not ideal, but here's a used NLS at a store in Japan that will ship to the US. All in you'd be looking at about $1K shipped (maybe a little less), a price that would allow you to flip with minimal loss if you don't bond with it.

Use a proxy. There are several, I tend to use From Japan (https://www.fromjapan.co.jp/), but there are others.

In addition to the cost of the item, you will pay proxy fees, use their exchange rate (which will be a little less than market rate) and pay shipping to you. Most of the costs will be known to you before pulling the trigger. The only wild card is international shipping cost, and that will generally be between $150 and $250, depending on the carrier.

Whether you are responsible for duties/customs/VAT will depend on your location. In the US, if an item is worth less than $800, there are no duties.

I'm sure you could get screwed using any of the services, but I recommend not using buyee because they ended up costing me several hundred dollars to rescue 4 guitars.
