In a normal 3 position selector switch wiring schematic, what makes the middle position have normal volume, instead of double the volume of using either R or T pickup alone?

How is it not twice as loud using both pups?

Because they are in parallel. If you wire the switch to put them in series, you will cause that effect.

If you put them in series they won't be twice as loud, but they will be ten times as muddy.
