What don't you like about the 72?
Those early 70's can be killer if not too heavy and decent frets.
81 probably has a thin flat neck, heavy and maple neck. 3 things to consider for sure!
The neck profile is a big change moving from my 57 LPC reissue and my 50's Studio tribute.

If there documentation and the change to the 401 format on the Gibson website? When I have soon time I will email Gibson the serial numbers and ask about the 401.

I didn't know they had changed the serial number scheme, I always thought the late 70s up to around 2010 the 2nd through 4th number was the day of the year on Les Paul's, aside from reissues

From Gibsons website:

Those beginning with "94":
In 1994, Gibson's Centennial year, many instruments have a serial number that begins with "94" for the year, with the remaining 6 digits indicating the ranking number.

Click here to read it yourself

It was their way to mark the 100 anniversary models.

in 1995 they went back to the regular system. Appearantly for the people who make those guitar dater websites it's too much trouble to add this to their algorithm, giving people false production dates since, you've guessed it, 1994.

I think most important of all is being able to play the guitar in person especially if the neck is a concern.
I got my Les Paul custom on ebay about 8 years ago when the euro to dollar ratio was at it's absolute peak, I am very happy with the guitar. But I will never ever buy a guitar unseen again because there's too many factors that you can only feel in person. The best guitar I own gets the least play time because I don't really dig the neck.

I recall you mentioning it. I am a professor so I guess I was being a stickler and wanting a reference. I offered 2500. The seller said he would wait a while before taking offers. I agree with him. I didn't bother bringing up the serial number and the 94 production date again.
