He did not like the weight of the standard, so the tribute....unless he finds a really light one maybe ?
I would totally get the special with p90s. I'm pretty sure if correctly set up with maybe a litt'e work on the frets it could totally rock. I had a lp100 and honestly it was very loud unplugged, I'm always thinking I never should have sold it. It is not because a guitar is not made by a well known magician out of the wood of an old church that it can't sound good :)

I have the special with P90's and I love it. It's a great guitar and the pickups sound great. The only thing I did with mine was to replace the stock selector switch with a Switchcraft.

YES. Was mad enough to have mine shipped across the Atlantic (which cost me almost more than the actual guitar), but it was worth every penny.

Tuners were wonky (replaced those with Schaller ST6B -8.3mm diameter so no drilling), but other than that, it's a super-resonant joy-to-play no-pretense guitar.

There are plenty of Epis with P-90s to choose from. If the LP Special seems like what you want go for it. But don't overlook the Wildkat, Casino, 339 Pro P90, or SG Special 1961 anniversary.

Jim,
Although inexpensive, it is a lot of bang for the buck.
Cost considered, the Epi P-90's are good. The ones I have are just a bit hotter than my Gibson Vintage.
Pickup heights can be adjusted down (if need be) with the mounting screws... or up by adding pieces of high density
weather strip tape under the pickups. ( you can get it in rolls from most hardware stores)
ex:
Search Results for*foam rubber weather strip tape*at The Home Depot

And yes, the tuners are economy tuners.
The rest is setup.

Just another opinion,

Papa

I have a Special I with P90s and it's a great little guitar. I have it tuned to open G, 5-string tuning and use it for slide work and Rolling Stones tunes where that tuning is required. It's only one of 6 electrics that I own, but it definitely has a secure place in the lineup.

I bought one a month ago and still love it. I bought the worn black. It is very resonant unplugged. I changed out the economy tuners, the nut and the wraparound bridge just yesterday and it sounds great. I did that mainly for tuning stability and I didn't like the way the strings spread on the bridge. Tuning was fine but it seemed that I would have to play with it to get it really precise.

Tuning stability is much better since replacing the tuners and nut. I went with Wilkinson EX-lok tuners. The price was just right and it makes changing strings easy. Time will tell if they are keepers. I had to use a step drill bit to enlarge the holes from the back. Looks similar to a reamer. And I went with a black Tusq XL nut. I had to sand it down some to fit but it wasn't much. The Wilkinson wraparound aluminum bridge fit like stock. I had a 15% off coupon when I bought the guitar so I have only about $45 more into it than original price. I need to play with the neck angle a little bit to get the lower frets a little more level with the strings. I'm still playing around with pickup height to see what I like.

I installed Ernie Ball cobalt 10-52's

For now I plan to leave the rest of the hardware alone. I did notice that the frets seem to wear easily and they are not smooth from the factory. A fret polish would probably help this. The fret ends were smooth however and seem fine. I also oiled the fret board before putting the strings on it. I didn't really detect any waxy buildup on the fret board when I lightly scraped it.

BIB: This, but did it twice. First in faded black, then in TV yellow. I still have the yellow one, it is completely stock and I see no need for any upgrades. The black one was as good just not the colour I was after.

Get one as for the $$$$ what do you have to lose.

Are the bolt on neck specials that much lighter than the set neck epis?

I just picked up a used '57 Reissue Lp Jr. It is sweet, but if we were to talk about other p90 epiphones... I would think pretty hard if I were offered to trade my Jr for a Pelham Blue ES-339 w/P90s.

And don't forget the '56 Goldtop reissue. I bought one secondhand and it is a beautiful guitar. P90s really do rock.:)
