I can hook you up with 2 Max's my buddy Jerry is selling:)

The auction has 18 watchers, so we'll see.

Wouldn't you like DaVinci's brush?

I keep on seeing posters say how they are interested in buying a Max or Jerry's 2 Max's, but then they are still availible? Then AFTER you finally sell them, people will be saying "boy I sure wish I had a chance to buy them" or "why didn't you tell me, I would have paid $20K for each of them"

El Toro has a friend with TWO Max LPs for sale!! If you REALLY want a Max, here is your chance!! Quit talking about it and DO IT!! Remember MONEY talks.............

So El Toro, when are you or your friend going to put these Max LPs on Ebay?

Well all I really said is I would love to have a MAX, thats it. I never said I wanted to buy one, as I dont make a proffesion out playing anymore, I cant see my need for plunking down that kind of coin for one. If I were still gigging I would have one in a heartbeat. But for just sitting here playing it at home and looking at it here at home its not for me. It should find a home for a playing proffesional.

As for DaVinci's brush, I dont think it would make me JW DaVinci either. :)

OK,I probably misread something but why would anyone who believes in an instrument and the spirit of it's builder want to buy 2 more when they already have a few?Spread the wealth. The other thing I got is that Max is terminal and wants to go out enjoying life.I would love to have a plaintop MAX,but it won't happen unless I win Lotto. All the best,MAX!:applause:

This is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. These tools just remove wood. They are not that special. The jigs & templates that control how much and where to remove the wood is where the real money's at. The man that designed the jigs & templates is worth even more. These tools aren't like DaVinci's brushes like the seller states in the Q&A section; they're just the jars that hold the brushes. This is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

My post referred only to Max guitars;the tools sale is different. There is nothing magic about tools;only the maker.Template supplier?Interesting question.

All points taken into consideration, the guy is only interested in selling / trading the stuff to get some vintage guitars to retire with. Nothing more, nothing less.

I commend him on parting with some fairly personal / sentimental stuff he's had for the past 25 years that he created some really killer work with.

There is nothing wrong in trying to put some sizzle into ad to try and sell it, what do you most of you do when selling something ? you try and make it as attractive to the widest audience possible, given the fact that he already knew that most people would see it as just "tools and machines" but maybe... for one person out there this may be gold to another it may be just junk.

To each...his own.

No harm meant , once the avatar is animated it LOOKS GREAT it just looked kinda wierd static. As for the Max stuff I know what you are saying about it being one of a kind tools used by a master, I guess its kinda like an old camera used by say Annie Leiblowitz/Ansel Adams, sure it may not work and with i I couldnt' take annie like shots but it sure would be cool to have

The discussion of "worth" is really a subjective thing. Are Max's tools worth more than some other random old tools? "Yes" to many, "no" to some. Is a '59 LP worth 300x what a new Gibson is worth? "Yes" to many, "no" to some. Plenty of people would say that it is ludicrous to spend so much money on an "old guitar" just like is being said about Max's tools. How many guitars out there go for several times what they're worth just because of who used to own them?

I was avoiding this thread but I am in a feisty mood today so I will jump in. :naughty:

MAX is my friend, and the man that I apprenticed under, and my one time partner.

I know these tools and have used them, and can proudly say the are junk!

The fact that he could even make anything out of these baffles me.

Before you use them MAX would have to give you "tips" on keeping them tracking properly.

Yet he worked miracles with them. :thumb:

There are people who own real bursts and real MAX's that hardly ever play them.

They get pulled out of the cases and shown to friends.

I am sure there is someone out there who, in this adult version of "show and tell" , would love to walk someone out into the garage or basement and show off the very tools that made his instrument.

It might be worth the financial outlay for them to do that.

As to the marketing aspect of it all.......................well, I admire his balls.

With regards to the profession, MAX and I were building guitars before it was cool. It certainly was NOT profitable.

There was many a day, where we would wait and hope for a customer to come in to buy something or get some work done. A small deposit would be collected, the customer would leave, and MAX and I would look at each other and say ................cool! let's go eat!!

When you work for a company you can get health coverage, 401Ks, pensions,
retirement packages etc.

A luthier and anyone self employed sometimes has to live by skill and wits alone .

MAX and I have paid our dues...................If he wants to sell his equipment for 20K and can pull it off, more power to him. :thumb:

I'm sorry that Max is "out of the business", since he (and Roman) made some beautiful instruments. I, for one, would LOVE to own perhaps one piece of Max's hardware. I get the emotional attachment and the idea of some Max Mojo rubbing off on the new owner's projects. I'd pay more for one of Max's old routers than I would for a brand new one from DeWalt (then I'd probably buy a new DeWalt too).

I don't have $ 20K to spend on his old hardware, and in reality would rather spend that on one of his guitars! But, if he breaks up his tools and sells them a la carte - count me in!
