About a year ago I picked up a epi lp cheap with a broken headstock. The break is similar to this: http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/luthiers-corner/167230-1952-les-paul-headstock-repair.html

I know I need splines but im a but confused as to the technique for making the route and how to get the spline made so it fits tight.

BCRGreg said he used a dremel for the route and a belt sander for the spline. For a master luthier doing that freehand is probably easy. But for me im thinking about something with some sort of template or jig. The route im sure I could do with a template, but the spline I cant really picture a good way of getting it right.

I was looking at mortise & tenon jigs. It seems like its the same basic shape for whats needed here. Isnt a spline the same as a floating tenon in this application?

Anyone have something they used for making splines they'd like to suggest?

When BCR makes the routes and then the splines I think you will find that a fair bit of time goes into them.
Once the route has been cut, you could rough out the spline and then sand on sandpaper by hand to get the best fit.Its just time after all.

when I make splines I make a long strip of (usually mahogany) wood a little over 1/4" wide and maybe 3/8" tall. I make it a bit oversized. I route the slots with a 1/4" router bit and then use a hand plane to thin the spline stock so that it fits nice and snug. Trim it to length and then hand file the end curves.

That's pretty much the way I do it too :thumb:
