As far as I know, Explorers are solid mahogony bodies, but interms of body construction, if a custom made Explorer was made with a mahogony body and neck, and with a 3/4 inch layer of maple wood on top of the body, come closer to the tone of an LP?

Perhaps also with a glued on long tenon neck, and ABR hardware, and the such...

Reason I ask is, I would love to see or have the tone of an LP but in an Explorer configuration. The Explorer has easier access to the high register notes. I'd like to use it as a metal guitar but not exclusively so. It also looks great.

Mabye its been done or asked before.?
thoughts?

I respectfully disagree.
Interesting thought about the maple top though. To have a custom built explorer in the same fashion as an LP wouldn't be worth it in my opinion. But then again, I don't like explorers much.

it'd be strange.... I like Explorers but the maple/mahogany combo is not meant to be used in a guitar with such a thin guitar.

I respectfully disagree :)
I have many explorers, and some sound very LPish...reason being would be p'ups and electronics....as much as the type of wood the explorer or LP is made of.
Hamer has made the mahogany with maple top explorer called the "Standard" for years(see Rick Nielson of Cheap Trick),so I would suggest trying one of those :thumb:

well there ya go!
I'll have to look into that.
My hope was to find or even get a lutheir to make one with the thickness and wieght of an LP with the maple top, and considering the rest too...long tenon, sold neck etc.
This way start the tone up using an LP foundation.

Did some reading on it,
most Hamer Standards have alder bodies and/or 3 peice necks and the such.
I was hoping for a more "LP formula" but in the Explorer config.

I was trying to say that LPs have better access to the higher frets than Explorers! :thumb:

Hamer did well enough with that configuration on their Standard.
