Some companies and agencies do that, but not all. It is not universal. It all boils down to being lucky enough to be working for the right guys in the right field and in the right location. Or not.

The programs he is referring to are government sponsored programs. When I was laid off from Tyco I was eligible and attended school for a little while. I had a poor experience because of my representative with the CareerLink office, but others faired very well. There are guidelines to the programs, and before approving most for school they require a record of what jobs you have applied for and what job offers, if any, you have recieved. Once they determine that you have looked for work but failed they will approve the training whether it be a degree program or a field specific certificate. In my case I started classes for engineering.

I also believe they factor in what field you were in and what that particular markets demand is. I was in the semiconductor manufacturing field and my plants work was sent to china, so we were ushered right into the program.

Understood. But in this particular case - Macy's and holiday help....

When they hire seasonal temps to help with the holiday crush, they are not making any secret of it or misrepresenting it. The temps know (or should know) they are temporary and will be laid off after the season ends. If they were firing long term permanenet employees right before retirement, then I would have "issues" with it. But temps, are temps.

Yeah - so dont embrace new technology, dont become more productive and keep everyone employed.

You will then have a job for a company that can no longer compete and the imported products will eat you alive.

Sounds like Geo has the key to happiness but not prosperity.

How about we all just quit breeding? Then eventually we will all have a job! No matter if you deserve one or not.

Problem solved - quit fvcking and making babies.

I have no problem with technology. Nor have I ever stated we should not embrace it. I am pointing out the consequences of technology.

I have no problem with productivity or the promise of prosperity that higher productivity is supposed to represent. I do have a problem with only a small group enjoying that promise.

If we continue along a path that doesn’t consider the consequences of whatever we do, we will wind up down the shitter for sure, enslaved because of our own apathy, thinking we are free and worse... prosperous. We are in a race to the bottom.

The recent decline in the CDN dollar this past week has the usual cheers from the news media pundits saying it will benefit the manufacturing sector.

Er.. what manufacturing sector? The one thats been in decline for ages? Yayyy... allow me to celebrate my money being worth less.

I do like this graph, espcially the part of where we should be. We are not even close to that, as too many people have been brained washed by their perspective (albeit fantasy) teams. Your guy - my guy! However, We are no where near the bottom yet. We will all have jobs once we hit the bottom! Just won't pay enough to feed our families or keep a roof over our heads on those jobs.

I like how they announced it right after those 2,500 soon-to-be-former employees probably ran up holiday bills. It makes me feel better about my little blackout-drunk "event" in the Macy's in Honolulu. :hmm:
(Which was just expunged from my record this last year....:))

Maybe it varies from state to state but all I had to do was take a math & reading test and do a career assessment. I knew what I wanted to do but still had to do the assessment.

Every week I had to get an attendance form filled out by my teachers and turn it in to my case worker. That's all the shit I had to do for school.

I went to school 40 hours a week and was lucky to be able to collect unemployment during it all.

Sounds similar. My issue was that my case worker stalled my math and reading test for 2 months, which I then passed with above average scores. My career assesment basically approved me for anything I wanted so I chose nanotechnology fabrication which is essentially an electronics engineering degree. It was 3-4 credits off from one. He tried to stop my application to that program saying that it was too difficult and that I should choose something more attainable. By the time I got into class I only had about 6 months of UC remaining. I attended until my benefits ran out and was then forced to take a job making far less than I was making before. In the end it all worked out because I am no in a position where my company will soon be paying for my engineering degree. I will most likely be going for mechanical engineering with the plan to remain with my current employer on the product engineering team that I am already a part of within the Research and Development department. When I was dealing with the worker I filed several complaints, but everytime I inquired about them I was told "it is being looked into." As far as I know nothing ever happened. At least that 6 months of classwork was enough to get my foot in the door where I am currently at.
