The laptop was around 2 years old, and has had so many issues. my laptop before that was 6 years old and I never had any problems with it so I know there are good ones out there :D
How old is it? They retooled the entire Envy line this year and addressed the overheating issues with some design changes.

It's shitty luck that you got a bad computer, but that isn't representative of the general quality of their products.

I like to bust balls but, really, whatever works for you - one size does not fit all. If you regularly carry around a laptop - any kind - it's going to eventually have problems sooner or later. Some are more durable than others, but still there are always points of failure.

I bought a refurbished Dell around two years ago and it has worked flawlessly. But my experience is not a good indicator of durability for that make/model because I bought it to simply be a second computer and it's left home only once, maybe twice, since I got it.

what better than a laptop made from a single piece of aluminum then?

It's not so much the shells that fail on laptops, but the screen hinges/cables from opening and closing them and just from getting jostled around.

True.

I've hauled my Macbook Pro EVERYWHERE and it's been jostled around a LOT. I'm surprised it's held up as well as it has, really. It's 6 years old and still works very well. And it's still fairly current as far as processing power, etc goes.

That's a very impressive lifespan for a laptop that gets carted around a lot.

I've had my macbook for a little over three years? now, and it's performed flawlessly, without any tinkering for me... But perhaps most impressively is that I carry it around a LOT - Back and forth from home, school, work, and my off site studio... So it gets jostled around, and it just seems physically solid to me.

There's been no degradation with the hinges, or the shell at all, as far as I can tell, and I definitely don't baby the thing. :)

I just reinstalled OSX on a Macbook Pro that I had lying around. It's 4 years old now, and it works just as well as my current Macbook.

All the problems I've had with Macs have been due to me...

I dropped my first Mac down the stairs when my dog tripped me. I "dropped" my Pro when my GF of 4 years broke up with me (yeah, I had anger issues). Aside from crappy hinges and a broken DVD drive, the Pro is fine.

I don't buy in to the culture crap, and I think it's stupid that people talk about Apple like it's the single greatest technology company. Sometimes I find it hard to argue though, because I haven't had a problem with any of my Apple products yet.

Yeah...I mean, it gets me to lolcats and Facebook just fine. What else would I need it to do?

But I'm pleasantly surprised it's held up as well as it has.

Well, I use mine as a backup where, in addition to surfing the web and playing old NES games on an emulator, I also run Adobe CS4 and run some games that are fairly intensive (if with tamed back graphic settings). Everyone uses their machines differently and, even though my laptop is older and is no powerhouse, it still does what I need it to do even if not as well as my tower.

mmm well thats not entire true, its 6 years old ;)

but... OS X has a nasty habit of getting FASTER on older computers every time a new version comes out - so in this repect apple do a fine job in keeping the machine useful.

I have a g4 powerbook and its still a nice old workhorse for programming/browsing/wordprocessing/multimedia and the likes - yeah newer software that tries to use cpu extensions that just arent there dont work...but its funny to see how people react to a 9 year old laptop launching word so fast, or zipping away on the old interwebs... :D
