I bought a Trad Pro, and am having a hard time finding out what the glossy finish on the top is, as well as if standard guitar stands "Nitro-harmful" foam is ok on the "Satin" finish on the Pro's back of neck and body sides. GC ad says "Lacquer top, Satin back and sides". Is "Lacquer" different than Nitro and Poly? What about this "Satin", is it another form of nitro, poly, or lacquer"?

I'm shopping for guitar stands and understand the foam on them hurts Nitro, but not Poly. However, being that the stand's foam only touched the sides and back of LP Pro's neck, I need to know if the "Satin" finish on back of the Pro's neck and sides of body are Nitro-based, Poly-based, or something else, so I don't have to worry about the foam on the guitar stand harming the Pro. I put socks on it anyway, but I need some of the MLP guru input here, thanks.

Gibson Satin Finish is accomplished using UV Light & a special blend of solvents.

Gibsons Official Press Release states: "The UV-cured poly finishes are essentially a base coat and clear coat. They are much like automotive finishes designed for wood," project engineer Kevin Brown says "We experimented for months with the mix of solvents to find the finish with the softest, most natural feel, the lowest environmental emissions and best look."

The SL finish also reduces the finishing process from six to eleven days for lacquer down to five hours from white wood to a final dry finish. This significant time savings allows Gibson to price the two models under $1,000. "There are no lacquer guitars produced anywhere in that price range," Brown says. The UV-cured, soft poly finishes also require little or no buffing.

For the player, the poly finish is more durable and requires less care. "Lacquer finishes are pourous," Brown explains. "The poly is virtually impervious. There's no cracking or discoloration over time. Minor repairs are easy."

And the sound? Brown smiles and says, "It's a Les Paul."

To answer your other question about the Gloss Top that is indeed Nitrocellulose Lacquer. :)

Isn't that quote in regards to the "Sans-Lacquer" model, slab body Les Pauls?

Is the Satin the same thing?

Yes it is for the SL but I'm pretty sure it's the same procedure though maybe not exactly to the tee. Close though if not precise.

This info is regarding the Satin Finish & NOT the Vintage Finish like the VM's or the Faded SG's. Or at least in my opinion I don't believe so. On those I'm pretty sure it's just the wood pore filler (colored of course) then a light spray of Nitro over that & I mean VERY LIGHT.
