Hi,

last month I got myself a LP Standard PE - a really nice addition to my 2005 Casino Elitist and my first ever LP.
However I wonder if it has got a maple top or not. On the Epiphone homepage the body is simply stated as "mahogany". The unofficial wiki says that the LP Standard PE has a carved maple top. I'd like to trust the wiki more however Epiphone should know it best.

The second thing (after upgrading the knobs with gold hat ones and knob pointers similar to my Casino) are the PUPs. I can't compare the stock but to me they sound great after adjusting the height and the pole pieces. However in the not so far future I'd like to upgrade them. I'm looking for 60's sound, no hi-gain, and I believe the choice is between burstbucker 1&2 and the classic '57.
Is that correct?

Thanks in advance :)

Most likely that the maple top is the veneer they use (and quite possibly present under that paint, as many have found...) Don't think Epi puts "carved maple tops" on their "bread'n'butter guitars....not a bad thing, just a thing :) Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the quick reply - exactly my thoughts. In fact I don't really care because you get what you pay for and I think there is a reason for the non-translucent paint on the std's. I'm just curious and information on different sites varies - even stores tell you different stories :)

Amp, wiring, fingers, strings, nut, bridge, pups, cables, pedals, wood species are 95% of the sound imho on electrical guitars. Wood quality and number of pieces are an extremely small part of the sound, that's just my humble and honest opinion.
Put pups you like in your guitar, give it a good set up and a good wiring, and enjoy it !

I can't say bad things about the classic 57 and 57+ in the bridge position. To me that's very nice pups with THAT legendary LP tone. The splittable version is gorgeous, very subtle sound for the bridge and very nice neck sound too. It took me time and good amps to realize how nice this split position is.

Nice input - I was thinking about the wiring and will definitely change/enhance it (at least exchange potis and and caps) together with new pups.

It will be a 'maple' of some description top (likely to be several pieces) with a flame veneer on top.

:)

Actually, EPI does say "a solid mahogany body and maple top" on the body linked page.
Epiphone Les Paul Standard

But it does not specify carved or veneer.

Oh, you're right. I knew I got the information somewhere else apart from the Epi-Wiki and was confused because I then only found the information on the main page.
For this price I think it's just veneer however all current Standards are non-translucent - imho veneer would be useless and for the sake of sound it should be a carved top, even if it's a thin one.
