Is there any chance of modding the bridge on a Special I to the bridge on Special II?

I don't mind drilling, but I would like it to be a clean job. If I can find a template/hole specs, will I be able to intonate/tune after? What problems can I expect to run into? Am I just wasting my time doing this? It's cheap guitar that I don't mind experimenting on, but I'm not looking to destroy it either.

The width between posts should be the same on a special 1 bridge as it is on the tail piece of a special 2. in order to make that change, you'd have to plug & redrill the holes for the new width, and then drill more new holes for the tailpiece. You'd also have to make some very exact measurements. I personally, wouldn't even think about it.

There are adjustable wraparound bridges on the market that can do the trick just as well.

Kynlore,

I agree with the others conserning a wrap around tailpiece.....However....

BE WARNED!!!
Pay particular attention to the specs. (yes, you probably need M8 x 1.25 studs) Look carefully at string spacing and overall HEIGHT dimensions.

Some of the cheaper ones can be too tall.
This is what I had to go through to get one to work on a Epi Junior:
Beater Guitar Part 4 - Gibson Guitar Board

It doesn't mean you need to pay $100....just pay attention.

You can also get a Special II for $169 at Guitar Center...didn't see where the OP is though.

Just another thought.

So I guess the consensus is that it really isn't worth the effort. Thanks for the input. I'll either leave it as is, or look at the adjustable bridge as a replacement then.
