I'm looking at possibly making an offer on this:

However, having never owned a custom I'm looking for some help. Firstly should all the hardware be gold and secondly is it normal for the paintwork to tarnish so badly?
I quite like the look of it in the old war horse type of way but I'm not sure if it's the real deal. The owner says it's got a skinny neck and it weight relieved but I thought all customs were heavy as and had 50's necks?
Any advise will be much appreciated. Thanks
