I'm on the search for a LP Custom 2 Pickup Black Beauty and I've been trying to find a neck profile I like. I currently have a 2016 Traditional, but want a thicker neck. From playing a bunch of Les Pauls, I think my favorite neck has been the newer LP Standard 50s. Is that neck at all comparable to any years with the Black Beauties? I know the 57 reissue Black Beauties can have chunky C necks, but I've yet to try one. I tried out a Goldtop 57 reissue's medium c neck, and it didn't seem all that different from my Traditional's neck, so I'm wondering if I'd really even like the Custom (besides aesthetics)?

I know the 57 Reissue Custom Black Beauties have either medium C or Chunky C necks, but I've yet to try the Chunky C neck and as I already said, didn't much like the medium C neck on the Goldtop I tried.

I open a ‘97 Les Paul Custom ‘57 RI and in has a neck similar to my 2021 Standard ‘50s Goldtop.

I’ve also always loved the big ‘50s necks on my older LP Traditional’s and my past three older R7’s, however I bought a new 2019 LP Traditional, a super nice guitar but I was disappointed the Gibson made the neck smaller. Sold it.

I recently bought a newer LP R7 and was very disappointed in the smaller neck. All of my previous 2000 - 2010 R7’s had nice big 50’s necks.

It seems to me, that Gibson has been deviating from vintage models by making newer Historic R7 necks more tapered and smaller than previously.

I guess I’ll continue buying older model Custom Shop guitars.

I have a 2022 LPC Black Beauty 2 pickup and it's got a chunky neck (0.915"/1.007" 1st/12th frets). But it has a bit less shoulder (what I'd call medium shoulders) than I've encountered on the 50s Standards I've had in hand (which I'd call large shoulders). I think it's perfection (I like fatter necks but not necessarily large shoulders).

Is your Black Beauty the reissue or standard one? If its the normal Black Beauty, thats pretty big for the standard ones. It seems like you have to get a reissue to really get the large necks above 0.9" at the first fret.

To me, it seems like the Standard necks are almost "D" shaped vs. the Customs which are C shaped.

Yes, it’s a ‘57 Reissue.

I’ve got a 2021 ‘50s goldtop and the neck is wonderful. It’s a hand full of neck. I have big palms and relatively short fingers the neck ia joy to hold. It really compliments the full weight body. Mine weighs in at 11 lbs and the tone is just creamy. If you can find one with a neck like this, BUY IT!!

I’ve seen the 57, 68, and reg custom shops all over the place with neck profiles so I say find a weight range you like then live with the neck ;).

I agree. The neck sizes (and even shapes for that matter) can vary quite a bit, based on whether the neck was custom spec’d by the retailer (GC for example), or if the luthier was a little over-zealous with sandpaper that day.

Personally, the bigger the neck, the better. But, I have giant baseball mitts for hands. I can see where my preferences could be unwieldy to others.
