I know we have some gamers here who are also around my age so...

My two favorite RPG games for PC are Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, both of which I've replayed a number of times. I tried GTA IV but it ran like crapola on my PC (did some research and, apparently, it was a very poor port from PS) and I HATED the targeting system in GTA San Andreas so much that I stopped playing it.

I liked the fairly nonlinear game play, straight forward controls, variety of missions, wild car driving, weapons, decadent settings and crazy violence in both games. So, I'm looking for something to play that is pretty similar to III and/or VC (bonus points if it takes place in the 80's like VC :D). It doesn't have to be a new release but, no matter when it was released, it should run decently on a PC that is just a little over a year old and has been suped up a little.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

You are THE MAN! This looks EXACTLY like what I'm looking for! Thank you! :) :thumb: :applause:

Much of Scarface is based on what we've seen in Grand Theft Auto. In fact, it's fairly obvious that Radical used said series as the blueprint and then went back and re-evaluated its shortcomings. The result is that we have a game that fixes many of GTA's problematic elements, like the targeting system or having to drive out of the way to stock up on weapons, while also retaining many of its standardized and fun aspects. The developer has also introduced a number of unique features, most of which work out quite well. The result is an experience that fans of the genre will feel right at home with while offering enough original ideas to keep it feeling fresh.

It immediately came to mind with your description. The drug runs can get tedious but it is entertaining. Besides how often do you get a chance to be Tony Montana?

Mafia might fit the bill too.

It's a little rough, but it's got a decent story line and similar to the GTA genre.

Thanks! I did look at that game but the impression I got is that it's more linear. That is, one mission leads to another without allowing you to move do something else in the game world instead. I may still check it out though. Thanks! :)

Those are about as far from RPG as you can get. :laugh2: Good games, but definitely not RPG.

Rich, do you like RPGs at all?

It depends on the game. I like ones where the game play is a bit open ended rather than one action leading to another. That's one of the things I liked about MMORPGs but I don't have the time to play those huge time sinks anymore.

Well, whatever the heck they're classified as, I like 'em! :laugh2: The feeling of being immersed in a world, missions, driving around like a lunatic, shooting stuff...

So, you like the open world aspect. Which most open world games out now ARE RPG-type games, but they require time and involvement, which you said you're not interested in. I'm playing Skyrim right now, and it has an AMAZING open world, but you've got to dump several days into getting your character developed to where you want.

Perhaps Skyrim then? There's more than enough to do without all the time eternal grinding of an MMORPG. Do a mission and call it a night, if you like.

That type of game is an MMORPG, not an RPG to me - online, open world, tons of other players. I played Asheron's Call, Anarchy Online, Star Wars: Galaxies, City of Heroes, World of Warcraft and I'm sure some others I've forgotten and I've had my fill of the whole character developing/leveling grind. Those games are GREAT fun but I just can't dedicate that kind of time to them anymore.

LA Noire
Far Cry 2

Mirror Edge
Crysis
Devil May Cry
While LA Noire seems to have a great open world feel, it also seems kind of limited to the story line, since you have to go through so much investigating to get to action sequences. I don't know about the other ones.

I always think I'm going to do that in Skyrim, but then I'll go to do mission, and then be like, "Oh, there's a giant... OH GOD! HE SLAUGHTERED ME!" Then, I'll spend an hour just trying to find things to make better armor or potions or something. I LOVE it, but nothings ever quick for me at least. :laugh2:

The Elder Scrolls Official Site

GREAT RPG. Totally non-linear. Fire it up for 10 minutes - do a mission or quest - Save and OUT - no more 5 hour raids a'la MMO.

You know, now that you mention it, it IS pretty linear.

So give Dead Island a shot. It's got those violent scenes, it's an open sandbox game, and it totally kicks ass. But you're up against zombies rather than hood rats and gangsters.
